hey there, say... taking "cool" to mean the "smooth slip-sliding of a special stone, skimming over the cool smooth waters, to take on that very coolness, to itself, while in that chore, why:

i was at my "coolest" when i was a mommy... and just doing my ol' mommy things, as best i could, and having fun in the midst of it... :)

screw the pics. i'm thinkin what, i couldn't have carried an address book? i'm just learning the word fungable. not a word that you want to explain to the children at bedtime.
my gen did contribute culturally regarding the topic of experiencial imperative, (think gonzo journalism). it evolved into the broadcasting of each new beer cracked, that's just not trad. the first time i saw a out of focus arm in the corner of the frame, i was well, uncomfortable and politely didn't mention it. frankly, i was slow to try auto-...well nevermind.

Driving up that winding road to Sequoia National Park's Moro Rock...learning to thrash around in the bushes in order to find new routes not climbed yet with dad...meeting a random dude and finishing off the south face of the warlock in late summer heat with the water mysteriously gone half way through...surviving a thunderstorm and a snagged escape line on the RNWF...discovering Seneca, the Gunks, the Dacks, the New and North Carolina...what a long, strange, COOL trip its been.

Fall 1975 (or thereabouts). I’m one of the volunteer instructors for a Washington State University Alpine Club “Learn to Rock Climb” class. 20 or so students and instructors camped out on Icicle Cr. above Leavenworth, WA.

Dinner was lots of pizza & beer from town. It snowed about 4” during the night.

In the morning I crawled out of my tent with a hangover and shuffled through wet snow to the table with leftover, snow-covered pizza and beer. As several students watched in mild shock, I brushed snow off a remaining 6-pack of beer and popped one. Then I brushed more snow until I exposed a snowy chunk of pizza.

To my surprise ---------I was suddenly cool: standing there with my hangover, munching on frozen pizza and swilling beer at 9:00 in the morning. I later heard that the students were telling stories about tough-guy me.

In the “cool index,” it’s been mostly downhill since then

I'm bumping this. It feels like 2013 has been a long list of bad news so it's time to change that and think of how great things were the first time you lead a climb, or got laid, or when you heard Blood on the Tracks, or when you just broke up and you were walking away wondering what the future had that was going to make you feel more then you felt right then?
Stories with cigarettes, a little off kilter, music that needs to be turned down, and just what was it, that compelled you to choose to spend your time climbing rocks?

In retrospect, it is stunning how awful-yet-amazing some of the clothing combinations were.

Gotta go listen to some Split Enz, BRB...
