Brass Nuts, there are more around than HKnott biting their tongue. If you're committed to salvaging that machine, Team Brass-Crimp (sounded better than Crimp-Nuts) send it to Werner, I bet it will come back better than it ever was... There's prolly someone almost like that in Boulder, as well.

Download this and run it.

Send the machine to me by FEDEX and I'll guarantee I'll have it running perfect.

1. Preheat your oven to 425F.

2. Place computer on ungreased cookie sheet.

3. Bake for about 30 minutes or until golden brown.

4. Everybody knows heat kills viruses.

5. If this doesn't work, call Dell customer support in Sri Lanka. They'll have the problem ironed out in about seventeen hours.

sorry for the joking around. hope you find a solution soon.

Crimpie,

Werner has fixed my computer many times and he fixes about every other computer around here too. He has a masochistic streak in him and actually enjoys this kind of stuff. He is way better than the IT people at the company's I have worked for.

Very funny Micronut! That was quite funny -

Werner, I'll try this in a second and let you know how it goes.

I'm curious - so this is not really a virus, but a 'rootkit'? And these things can get a machine with or without virus software? Vicious.

What is the best free anti-virus or anti-rootkit program?

Or forget free, what is the best program available?

This is the antivirus program I use.

http://www.avira.de/de/pages/index.php

For rootkits

http://www.greatis.com/unhackme which has the reanimator program built in.

unhackme is a dangerous tool for someone who doesn't know what they are doing.

To be able to eradicate rootkits without destroying your operating system you need to know a few other things too. It's good to have a "live cd" that you can boot into to disable the infected operating system. Knowing the registry is also required.

Understanding file extensions, dynamic link files, system files, etc etc is also a plus.

To get your personal data off, one option is to boot the computer using a Linux "live CD". For example, you could download the latest version of Kubuntu, burn it to a CD, and then use it to boot up the infected computer. You can then "mount" the hard disk partitions, and copy whatever information you need to a USB storage device. This is all pretty easy to do, if you know what you're up to. Perhaps you have a Linux-capable friend?

After that, I recommend reformat, ponder operating system options, and reinstall. Good luck.

damn, some of you guys actually sound like you know what you are talking about. Rather unusual for an off topic thread. ha

I don't know anything, but I use Avast anti virus. Free, and it updates itself every time I boot up. Don't know if it would stop this one though.

I forgot last night.

The floppy may be gone as a source of infection, but those USB drives are a pretty handy replacement.

Crimpie, it should be obvious that if you laptop is securely connected to your local network and you are posting from your local network, the laptop is connected to the internet.

Check the other machines in your local area network. Reasonably good chance they are infected as well.

We're back. Had to go to bed last night - lots of computer stress. First thing is to do what Werner suggested and try to get control of the registry again. I'll let you know how it goes...

Everyone has been super helpful - thanks a zillion for sure.

Tried that registry thing also. It ran, blue screen of death again. Something about trying to do something when things are pending. Though the machine is way better than when we started, the demon is still there.

I'm going to preheat the oven now.

It's Dave's machine and I think he is feeling that wiping it clean is all that remains. I feel for him - if it were my machine, it'd be him writing to you guys while I was on the ground stressed out.

Can't say we didn't give it a good try.

Now I just worry is all the machines in the house are infected. And where the infection came from. And how to know if it's here until it kills the machine. I'm feeling stressed now.

Hi Crimpie,

I'm not any kind of computer expert so what I say should be taken with the grain of salt.

I've lost two computers to viruses. The Norton/Symantec and McAffee anti virus systems did not work well for me. They failed to stop significant virus attacks. About two years ago, a computer tech told me Bit Defender and Kaspersky were the best anti virus programs.

I've been using Kaspersky for two years and haven't been infected, since, (as far as I know) on either of my computers. Kaspersky sends hourly online updates, on the latest threats, while most programs send once a day. And Kaspersky was less expensive than what I paid for Norton. I've heard Kaspersky has a " better handle" on the varieties of virus that originate in Eastern Europe and Russia.

I'm giving this as an opinion, based on my own experience---there are individuals here who obviously know more about the subject--- I'm just posting it for "for what it's worth".

Werner, you never cease to amaze me with your knowledge and talents. Since you’ve always been a “Park Fixture” where did you learn so much about these wretched machines? The best I can figure, you must have gone to the Yosemite Institute’s advanced training, no? (-;
