Hopefully there'll be a 50th/Salathe event in autumn 2011.

But Peter H. won't be allowed to attend - solo, that is!

It sounds like you have lined up a date for him.

Dimes, throw us some more bones when you get back from JT.

Very nice portraits, Dimes.

Peter and I talked about your picture taking during the Sunday meet-and-greet. Peter pointed out your high end equipment and long lens—and ‘stalking.’ Good picture taking.

The reunion seems to have been a great success for everyone who attended. And hats off to Ken for organizing both days and the Nose climbers for staying ‘on’ the whole time and recounting the details of there experience.

I love the history of Yosemite climbing and the stories of all the participants, even when I lived there. (I have even come to appreciate Allen’s goofy hat.) But joining a reunion like this one goes beyond that public honoring; there is another more personal layer of grounding our respective experiences in Yosemite in a community that stretches backwards and forwards. While I have climbed with or been close to only a small portion of the climbers at the reunion, we all know that we shared the same experiences, and this becomes more obvious as we get older. I also think that this combined sense of connectedness and leveling can also be unsettling as such personal histories become so universal, and bounce between the banal and the “what were we thinking” sense of unreality.

I agree completely with Peter that we should all work at getting together again soon, and I hope that many more folks will make it. I have a better idea of what to expect. And I recognize that it is not automatic that somehow if we are all thrown together in the same room that old friendships immediately click back on. As Royal commented with a sly smile to Peter and me: “I used to know you, and you,” pointing to each of us in turn. I now what he means: where do you start after 35 years?

For reasons that I cannot now fathom, I did not spend much time with Royal and Liz beyond a few minutes at dinner on Friday and a brief hello at the somewhat chaotic Saturday meet-and-greet, before someone was pulled away.

Maybe we should practice speed dating as a warm-up.

Doug’s response was probably pretty much felt by everyone else in room.

One of my main reasons to go to the reunion, beyond granting the 50s climbers their due, was to spend time with Wayne Merry, whom I had not seen since he and Cindy moved to BC in the early 1970s. We exchanged many e-mails during the organizing of the reunion but finally left it to chance that we would somehow get some time to visit. It didn’t work out that way: we were only able to chat at the edge of the stage during a break at the Saturday night presentation. We will make it work better the next time.

On Saturday, given my reluctance to interrupt folks at the meet-and-greet, I resolved to work harder on Sunday at that meet-and-greet to spend time with the 50s climbers. However, on Sunday they were mostly behind the table signing things. There was a funny sight of Cindy Merry standing in line—presumably to get a word with Wayne. (I suppose she just wanted everyone’s autograph.)

I didn’t have it in me to stand in line to say hello to Wayne, George, Rich, Wally, and Mark. I should have. If I had a copy of the Pentateuch, I could have asked them to sign their respective chapters in Genesis.

Fortunately several old friends were milling around so we were able to visit, and I was able to get to know a few younger climbers and ST campers. I was also fortunate to spend time with Peter, Jim Pettigrew (and his wife Shawna) and Ellie Hawkins, all climbing partners, at a very long breakfast enforced by the kitchen staff quitting after our order was taken but before the meal was cooked. I don't think it was personal.

All said, I have no complaints—it was all good—but I know that when I attend the next reunion, I will work harder to spend more time with folks, and I will hope for more time. A time with better weather might help—more outside gatherings and at least the prospect of doing a little climbing. Although, it was a good thing that no one was around to record the scene of Peter, Jim and me crawling across the talus on the old road to get to the Cookie and then taking too many milliseconds to realize that the 20 foot tall (my, that looks big!) boulder above the road was not the Cookie itself, imaginary route spotting notwithstanding.

Actually I do have one modest complaint. I was disappointed that more 60s and 70s climbers didn’t show up to pay their respects to the 50s climbers. I know that many of us don’t like ‘group socializing,’ but I think everyone should try to see it from the perspective of the honorees and the community as a whole. It should be fun to go to someone else’s party.

From my perspective, I hope that we can organize more get-togethers—and that we don’t have to wait three years, much less another 50. Anyone got an idea on how to lure the 50s guys back for another round?

And, Kevin, if you have more reunion pictures, I hope we get to see them soon.

Time is fleeting and effervescent, a quality to our lives that we can experience but never control. I lift my glass to all of you who inhabit this place and time. God Speed in this day and all the days allowed us.

The days of climbing that encompassed the original Nose climb and All the climbs that followed done by the regular human and those that make it look easier ......Well done, each and every one.

To All, many thanks for your wonderful and supportive comments. They are very much appreciated and motivating. I will post a few more Images over the next few days. I have to give credit to Lynnie for coming over to my place last Friday evening and pushing me to process some of the raw digital files and then helping me post them. Once again thanks to all who have expressed their appreciation for the Images that really we all helped to create.
