You got the song correct...he loved Jim Croce...thus I love it too. THANK YOU for posting the pic of him shaving with the knife. It is my all time favorite and your timing was impecceble! What a man! haha! I saw that he had it on his computer but had made it where he was cutting the top of his head off and I was not sure if it had been posted here before and if anyone knew it was really him!
I am so confused right now...I see that he has posted thousands of times...I only went into the recent ones to try and gather some information but I do not know any of the names of those he was closest to and I refuse to get into his email and invade his privacy in that way. He did not want anyone to see him get sicker. It was difficult for him to have us see it. He had not been able to leave the house in quite some time...this computer, this forum, and you people...were his everything outside of his family. He felt strong and as if he would live forever when sharing with you...it had to stay that way. I hope you can all understand...
Now I see why it made him so happy.
Thank you so much... ~Allie

Man o man, Allie. hearing all this stuff is bringing on a flood of emotions and memories. I'm sure the wee hours and state of mind have something to do with it but I can't help but feel your emotions. It comes through in your writing. I have this notion that your father will be rich man on the other side. He touched so many strangers on this side.

Thanks for filling in your father's picture for us here. His posts were always light-hearted but sometimes pointed, just enough to keep people honest. You could tell he had little ego and tons of real-world savvy. Sharing fish and game with others less fortunate (or accurate with a squirrel gun?) doesn't surprise in the least. He is assuredly a piece to this place that won't be replaced.

Allie,
I think I surprised Ouch once, when I recognized one of his "toons" as an old Air Force Survival School photo.
It took me a couple of prods to even get him to acknowledge it!!
There were at least three of us that posted here on supertopo that were Air Force Survival Instructors. Your dad, myself and Buggs. So he really was among brothers here, even though we didn't write about it much.
Everyone looked forward to the moment that Ouch would sneak up on a thread and slice in with his unique voice of humor. He had a way of disarming any argument and making everyone laugh. I can even recall many times when people would ask within a thread when Ouch was going to hit it with his art.
It is indeed a smaller world here without him, and we are all sad for your family. As others have said, you are of course welcome here in his place at the campfire.

I had a bad feeling. Our correspondence had gone stale, and Sam had made references to problems.
This is devastating news.
I went to sleep early last night only to wake to THIS.
Please know that my thoughts are with you Allie, and that Sam was a big part of why I hang out here.
It just won't be the same.
It is not good to start out crying your coffee.

ahhh... I'd FORGOTTEN about him serving in the Air Force!! (How COULD I!?!) He and I somehow got into a long e-versation about The Air Force and the fact that he had served - though he never shared in what capacity - and I was an Air Force Brat...
We also had MANYMANY conversations - both on the forum and via email - about Tennessee, TVA, hunting, fishing, the beautiful scenery and general lunacy around these parts and of course, Ringgold, GA. Sam had me absolutely rolling on the floor sharing Ringgold stories with me and about he and your mom running off to Ringgold... (it's only about 15 - 20 minutes from me.) Now THAT is a place you would appreciate visiting and seeing through your Dads eyes!! WHEW!! The quips he could pop off about North GA/East TN (and with such accuracy!!)
I am truly honored to have been able to share parts of his epic story with him... And even more so to have been "Ouch!ed" on more than one occasion!!
Thank you for sharing even more of this special man with all of us...
Much love and yes, joy, to you and your family, particularly your mother, as you transition through this time and celebrate an amazing man. I do hope that those who have them will post some of Sam/Al's art so that you and your family are able to share even more in the humor (the "honey" if you will...) that kept all of us smiling despite - or perhaps because of - our differences and begging for more...

Oh Allie,
I'm so sorry to hear this. Your dad was the greatest moderating influence on this forum. He had an amazing way of "slicing" in his incisive humor just as a thread was going to hell. I can just imagine how well he did that around a campfire or dinner table. My life is poorer for not having known him outside of this forum and life is sad now that I know he's gone.
peace,
Mal

I just woke up to this (asleep early last night) and I'm bawling like a baby.
Thank you Ouch!
Thank you Allie, you know where to look if you need anything we can help with.
Death in the family/a life to celebrate.
My daughter felt proud to be ouched.
Whoever was archiving those Ouch! cartoons, how's that coming ?
