The Alpinist rocks but their demise may make my wife happier. With each arrival she sees the journey in my eyes. You authors of such tales have given me frostbite in my back yard in Aiea. You have allowed me see what it out there and caused me to push myself more.
Without the Alpinist she feels she will see me more, that Alaska may not be calling, that South America can't happen and that the Himalaya are just too darn far.
Sorry My dear, the Alpinist lives in each of us, the mag just magnified the voices.

Is there a possibility that Alpinist may make a comeback? "Suspeded operations" doesn't necessarily mean a permanent end.

Very sad news indeed. Each issue was a jewel. I cannot ever remember reading an article that I didn't enjoy. Most assuredly can't say that about the others. It will be missed.

Thanks for posting Katie.

Thank you Buggs for sending me the El-Cap issue. Now it's even more of a treasure than it was a moment ago.

I also come from the old Mountain/Summit days, and Alpinist made it feel like we still had the real thing. Expensive but worth it.

I hope that Alpinist can make a comeback. Thanks for such a fine product that made us all yearn for the high places....

Clicking on to Supertopo and seeing this news this morning, my first response was the same as most of you: What a downer.

But on reflection, maybe we should just all be grateful for six years of something precious that we received for next to nothing. Alpinist carried on the proud tradition of Ascent, and we're all going to be poorer for its demise. But 25 issues is probably 25 more than the business case could ever really support, so thanks to Mark for the original vision, and to Christian and Katie for carrying that vision into print...

Honestly although the print quality was beautiful, it was the articles and photos that made the magazine. How about printing it on cheaper paper or even making it available only online? I'd still subscribe and pay the full fee for an online only version or a version printed on cheap paper that maintained the quality of the writing.

Wished Climbing bit the dust instead.

And now the financial crisis hits home, what a shame...

Aaaaaacccckkk.... that's the last thing I wanted to read this morning. It, indeed, is a sad day. Alpinist Magazine was climbing porn....amazing photos, great artwork and cartoons, and yes, I actually read it. It will be missed. Kudos to Christian, Katie, and the staff, and Marc for subsidizing it for as long as he could. Dammit....

Yup I paid up too, but feel fortunate at least to have gotten my El Cap issue.

Still, if their website say they're shutting their doors, wouldn't be appropriate to take down the banner ads about subscribing?

Seriously, noone cares about all the subscription money?

I'm one issue into a two year subscription?

What happens to my roadtrip money (which was the coinflip in deciding to subscribe) that they got?

Oh that seriously sucks. The ONLY reason I enjoy going to my mailbox. Here's to hoping for better times and an eventual return.

Not to worry about the subscription banner...because now it links to a blank page.

Many thanks to Christian Beckwith, Marc Ewing, and the entire Alpinist team. Rumors of folding for financial reasons circulated way back around issue 8. Thanks for sticking it out and giving us 17 more fine issues which will, no doubt, become a permanent part of the history of alpinism.

It is a sad day indeed. The credit crunch has finally hit me in the gut. Being young and free of any credit woes, I thought I would just shrug through this depressed economy. No more...

Being a young and relatively new climber, this publication gave me insight into the great tradition that is alpinism. I thought this was the greatest gift that alpinist offered to someone of my age... historical perspective. The articles taunted me to run it out, go light, think about Royal and Liz while climbing nutcracker, and understand our roots. In these days of gym rats, bolt clippers, and "safety first", it was so good to know that my sense of adventure was rooted in a healthy tradition.

Thanks to everyone who put their heart into Alpinist. You will be sorely missed (hopefully not forever!!)

Bummer. But, they went out with a huge bang (the El Cap issue) which was one of the finest single issues of any climbing mag I've ever seen, so they can say they finished proud instead of loading up the mag with 80% ads and then whimpering out the door.

David - How could there ever be a final issue of Ascent? If Alpinist has shown anything, it's that there is plenty of the "right stuff" floating around out there to fill issues of Ascent into the future. Seems a shame if it just fades away.

Such and awesome mag. Such a bummer. I really enjoyed all their web posts on latest news. I feel they were doing an amazing job of tracking down the latest big sends. and issue number 25 was probably the best climbing mag ever

Perhaps our government could bail out Alpinist. It would be a far better use of "our" money then throwing a rope to AIG, Lehman and the other big financial outfits. Probably a fraction of the 700 billion would suffice.

Thanks to the staff, investors, contributors, subscribers, readers and advertisers for making the finest mountain sport magazine last as long as it did.

Hello,
Not sure if anybody needs one or not, but my local book store, has about ten copies if the 25th issue left. I picked up a few extras for friends, and would be glad to get the others if need be. Let me know if someone wants one, just the cost of the magazine, and whatever the postage is, and I will mail them out. Really hate to see the end of such a fine magazine.
Cheers,
Bruce.

There is now a post on the forum that says Alpinist may just be reorganizing... not folding completely
