Hi Chris, Thanks for the interesting report. Like you, we became very interested in the north peak of Seven Gables ( 12,640’ ) back in the ‘90’s. After contacting Steve Roper, Galen Rowell, Claude Fiddler, Robert Secor, Alex Isabeau and others who had done FA’s on that peak, we were able to unravel the confusion. In 2000 Steve Teixeira and I tried to climb the “ Central Rib “ that you soloed. We put in three pitches one afternoon and came down. Those were our slings you saw. The plan was to return the next day and top out. While re-racking at the base, we heard a tremendous roaring noise. I told Tex to lean back and watch the jet fly by. He yelled, “ Rockfall! “ and we both dove under a boulder. A massive, house sized section of the mountain had broken loose just left of the top of the “ Central Rib “. We survived, but were so spooked that we decided not to return the next day. In 2002 The American Adventure Service Corps ( taasc.net ) climbed the peak via the col to the north with fixed lines ( pretty sure this is where our good friend Mark Wellman fell and sustained his spinal cord injury ) and unofficially named the peak, “ Spirit of America “, in honor of all those who lost their lives in the 9-11 tragedy. Since then over 60 members of TAASC have climbed “ Spirit “. I have a copy of the tyvek topo we placed in the register which notes all the routes done as of 2002. I wasn’t able to attach it, perhaps you can. Feel free to email me for a copy. mike@beanstalkjourneys.com.
