Wow, great TR! Thanks so much for taking the time to put it together.
And just so you know, you bit off a hell of a lot for your first desert trip. I think it took me four trips to Moab to hit all that stuff. So bigtime kudos to you for handling it as well as you did!
Cheers,
GO

Drawing the cartoons each day adds a funny element to the trip. We've got them saved in a book. Here are some others some may relate to. Know how I mentioned feeling like I was going to yak on numerous occasions? Here is my illustration of this:
(sorry it's blurry, it's a tiny little drawing)
Here is Dave on that devious crack:
And, here I am after the 7+ mile hike near landscape arch in 100+ temperatures:
Susan:
Happily most of the tan came home with me. It's nice to be out of the midwest in a place that the sun's rays actual meet my skin. My tan is back! I would've wondered if it was me or dirt except that we were cruising in the Great White - complete with a shower. :)

Those are great cartoons and any magazine worth its paper should buy them from you. Hey....that could be a new business that would prevent you from ever going back to the academia grind: crazyclimbingcartoons.com. Combine that with Arte Candera(?) and you've got income you can generate from anywhere.
Kate Rutherford makes jewelery on rest and rain days and it keeps her on the road. www.suspendedstonedesigns.com
Think about it....retired at 44! (Oops! Was I susposed to say that?
Best,

Wimpergirl, how about that "great white"? Once you get a Skamper you'll never go back to camping on the ground or the back of a truck. God are they great or what?!
Cartoons are pretty funny.

Suze,
I had a pop top* that pooped out after a dozen years while the truck lived on.
Now I can reach even more places in the 4X4 (and my camper didn't even have the extended ass end), but when gas hits $5.00 this summer I won't be hit nearly as hard.
I think a pop top Sportsmobile will be the way to go, but there's that cost thing again.
* it was a Four Wheel pop top
Keep up the good work Crimpie. The desert can always use a little more biomass.

Excellent stairs! Dave said the first time he took the camper out, someone ripped off his stairs! This was at Indian Creek. Bummer.
If the camper is considered aid, I am a proud aid climber. :)

IMO, the 3/4 ton pick up and Hallmark pop up camper is the way to go. I thought very seriously about a Sportsmobile, but here are some of the advantages of the truck/pop up combo:
1. Way more interior room
2. Bigger fridge, 3 burner stove
3. 10 windows, 360 degree views
4. Better mileage than a 4wd Sportsmobile (13+ vs ~10)
5. Ability to drop camper for 'base camp' or to use truck as rugged assault vehicle (or grocery getter)
6. Better insulation in topper portion (R8 vs none in SMobile)
7. 30 gallon water capacity
It's a hotel on wheels... "live large and get large" :-)

Thanks for the info Brass.
I got that same thing... queen bed, water heater, three-burner, three-way fridge, heater... pretty deluxe. Just need to upsize my truck a bit.
Edit: located the steps online.
Don't see the jacks...how would you drop the camper? Jacks in truck?

Dave here... my camper has removable external electric jacks on all four corners - makes dropping or mounting the camper pretty quick with a hand held remote control for the jacks.
