The ultimate blend of old west but still very effective lever action, go with a Browning lever action in 358. Basically it's a 308/762 NATO case blown out to 358 diameter. The BLR has bluing so deep that you can see yourself in it. Unlike the '94 Winchester, only the lever moves. The guts all stay inside the action where they belong, out of harms way. As far as power goes imagine a 357 Magnum on 'roids.

12 gauge pump shotgun fulfills all of your criteria and gives you the most versatility. It can be used on expeditions to both Alaska or Northern Canada (where handguns are restricted) for bear protection and can hunt anything from small to big game with the appropriate load for fresh organic healthy meat. It also takes weather and mud better than a rifle.
My 20" smooth bore Mossberg 500 with ghost ring sights can put a factory slug in your chest from an offhands stance every time at 100 yards (or in your head with a rest), so tagging a caribou in the Chigmit Range after climbing the Tusk or on Unimak Island after a tele ascent up Shishaldin could save you in case food runs slim and your bush pilot is delayed picking you up. Holds 8 rounds which is more than any bolt action rifle, and has no scope to get knocked off kilter while bushwacking through alder and devil's club.
I spent time with an indigenous subsistence family near Madidi National Park in the Bolivian Amazon and they used an old rusty 20 gauge single shot with BB shot for anything from small birds to 100kg plus tapir on their weeklong jungle forays for meat.

And cheap too.
Ammo and the gun.
Every coke dealer I knew had one behind the front door, right next to the baseball bat and the 9 iron, the iron being legal outdoors.
"Just practicing, officer."
"Where are your balls"
Use an Aluminum bat, when you tag the guy's skull, it goes ding!
Hey, Springer is getting weird lately, they got a guy with no arms, I mean legs, and the security guys let people duke it out, if they get too rough, the security guys flick them to the ground with a flip of the wrist, too much!

I think Shack got it right. Winchester model 94AE .357 magnum, or the equivalent in a Marlin or Rossi.
In fact, I'm selling mine if you're interested.

Nope. Ran out of Indians to shoot.
I prefer liberals, and a 10-shot lever action just isn't cutting it. I need another rifle with high capacity mags.

Casull.454 for a good wheel-gun.
I like my Springfield Armory XD .45ACP, 13+ 1 in the chamber. It's a great belly-gun which you can unload in about 2.5 seconds. Just don't bring it to California (it's illegal).

The trouble with a .454 is that even the .45Colt isn't cheap practice anymore (not to mention over-penetration).

My tricked out model 1927a semi auto Thompson with a removable buttstock for history sake. That gun can spit out .45acp all day.

Do we need Bagpipes for the Vedic Hymms, or is that optional?
What about Limburger?

While the 12 is good for close in, hard to beat something that extends your range. I picked up an armalite M15-A4C and it's a great little carbine. I'm currently running the detachable iron sights and with range pickup mixed brass, rem bulk 55 gr fmj and no loadwork it would keep them in a 2-3" group at 100 yds. More impressive given the overcast day, 25yd black bulseye target and grey backstop at the range. All a long way of saying it was difficult to get a good sight picture. I imagine topped with some glass and some load work it would be an honest moa rifle.
30 rd mag, cheap ammo, no recoil, whats not to like?
I just need a companion w/ a 20" 1-7 twist as a platform for the heavier vld pills, and a bit more speed. Likely this one.

Somehow the Stoner design doesn't evoke the old west.

It might be a little late to ask (but I'm suprised no one bothered asking this before since it seems obvious), but what exactly do you need to protect your homestead from?
I've never owned a gun nor likely ever will. But if I ever did buy one to defend my actual home and family, I'd only consider a shotgun. If I ever really had to use it, I'd only want to have to pull the trigger once and not have the person get up. Alot of the suggestions you've gotten on this thread seem more designed to "defend" your acreage against jackrabbits.
