hey ken,

swear to god i'd be there but i still have not recovered from the trauma and embarassment of our little sojourn down to sequioa national park, fall '88, where you scored me a job as a laborer and i overdid it it the first night and spent the next morning hurling while i tried to move huge, 200 lb. rip-rap rocks with shultz.

my guess is you remember nothing of this...but it was a seminal four days in my life.

here's the real trip: did you know that dave's old flame mary is now the f*#kkin' SUPERINTENDENT of lake mead NRA? jesus, life is strange. good on her is all i can say. she went for it and realized her dreams.

anyway...don't know what the point of this story is. i guess i just miss the valley, i miss the 70's and 80's in the valley, and i wish i could be there to help out.

good on you, man. you're making it happen. werd. swole to the core.

peas, out.

BVB, Obviously it didn't impress me at all because, I was probably keeping you company and offering support. I honestly don't remember that at all. I do remember throwing my back out and Dave offering to correct it for me. I gave in because I was desperate, and it worked and I was able to finish the work. Don't worry I would hire you again in a heartbeat. I had heard about Mary. It is funny how we are all connected.Take care Bob and I hope to see you again soon (perhaps the Facelift). Are you still with Jocylen (sp?)?

This year the YARTS system has added a late afternoon bus from Merced and going to the Valley so those using the train do not have to bivy in Merced. It is getting much easier!

You can get a 10:45AM train at Union Station in LA that gets you to the Merced YARTS bus that arrives in the Valley at 8PM. The total cost one way is $39. If you assume gas at $3 per gallon and a driving distance of 380 miles, driving is better cost-wise only if you get better than 29 miles/gal. This assumes no driving cost other than for gas. Elapsed time is about 9 hours for an average speed of 41mph including about a one hour lay-over in Merced.

Coming from Ventura or Santa Barbara is a little tougher because you need a bus connection to the train at Bakersfield. But it is not all bad if you plan it right. You can spend some time in downtown Bakersfield.

John: All going well, I will/can pass through Manteca or Merced en route to the Valley and Camp 4, late afternoon on Friday September 21st. Perhaps we can link up?

Anders:
That would be great, if it is no bother. YARTS works pretty well.
I come into the AMTRAK station( I think it is near 24th and K in Merced at 4:19 PM. It is at K for sure. Go to where K crosses the tracks and you are there. There are another set of tracks down near 16th street but those ain't it. Google map gives one the layout fairly well.
The bus takes off at 5:15PM so there is a good window for us to connect.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to stay for the Robbins/Frost talk on Wed. Last year I watched the film of Steck, Roper and Long climbing the Salathe. Steck and Long were there giving running commentary which was really entertaining. The film has no sound. Later I thought, what a wasted opportunity, with today’s technology the great commentary could have been recorded and spliced into the film/dvd without that much trouble.

My point is that if the Robbins/Frost film has no sound, someone should record their commentary so it will be available to put into the film.
Just an idea.

Zander, We recorded that event and so did the AAC. We are not pros but are trying. I agree that this stuff needs to be recorded before it is too late. That is one aspect of this museum project.

hey there cris... say, thanks for the link to the schedule, posting... for those folks like me that cant be there, it gives us an idea of all the events, etc....

say, i sent ken a hand made dream catcher for the raffle... and some small earrings, too.... not time to make something more elaborate--dont think it would arrive in time.. but one never knows... if i get more time, later, i may have another go at it...

thanks again...

edit---say, i just saw the raffle is for the 30th... so i just may try for a nice necklace to send....
