From a Summitpost.org post:

I just called the hospital to ask Rob for permission to share a few of the details. He told the nurse he was sure I would use "good and wise judgement". Well, I hope this meets with his approval:

On the way to Yosemite last Thursday night Rob swerved to avoid a deer and lost control of his car. He told me that he broke three cervical vertebrae in the accident. A surgery to repair the damage last Friday seems to have been successful, though it will take some time to know for sure. Other than that (as if that wasn't enough!) he does not appear to have suffered any other serious injuries.

He was very fortunate in that the person driving behind him was an EMT, who rushed to his assistance. She stabilized his neck until emergency personnel were on the scene.

He is recovering quite well, and will likely be transferred to a rehabilitation facility in Santa Clara (near where he lives) in the next few days. How long he will be there before being allowed home is unknown, nor is it known how long or how complete his recovery will be.

As I said in my previous post, Rob really appreciates the good vibes people are sending him, so let's keep it up.

GM Edit:

Apparently the folks at the hospital have had him stand up, albeit, briefly and causing pain. Reports on SP state that he has been sitting up as well.

I hope that this means no permanent neurological damage, but time will tell.

He’s a good lad who has always been psyched for the hills and very pleasant with his interactions with others.

I only know him from exchanging beta emails and such. I’ll see him tomorrow if things work out.

My daughter is crew chief of the Wednesday night candy-stripers at his hospital. She assures me that she will put a note in the log so that Rob will get VIP treatment from the teen aged female volunteers.

That should keep him in the hospital several months. ;)

Godspeed Rob!

Never met him but from his posts he seems like he really loves the rock and mountains, and was always stoked to go out and get stuff done.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Sending out some positive vibes your way Rob.

I'm sure some hunter will come along and bring some karma down on the deer that did this to ya :)

I’m bumping this thread to give updated news. Rob is now (Friday afternoon) having a second surgery to reinforce the work that was done immediately after he was medivaced to Modesto last week. Prognosis is good. When I first saw him a few days ago I was reluctant to shake his hand – you never know what to do when someone has a spinal cord injury. He proceeded to grab my hand and bust my knuckles. All extremities are talking well to each other and to his brain. He appreciates tremendously all the good wishes and prayers people are sending him. Keep it up. You are never so alone as when you are in his condition.

Odds are he will be transferred to a rehab facility near his home next week. I will miss him. Because I live five minutes from the hospital, I can pop in a couple of times a day to hang out with him. For someone with a busted neck, he has the most incredibly positive attitude. He is a fine person.

Godspeed Rob!

Thanks to everyone for the good wishes, visits, cards, etc. :D

I have been in the spinal cord rehab unit of Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose since 30-Aug. This place is pretty nice - they have a rehab gym (weights, stationary bikes, etc) and some other facilities. I am getting better at using a wheelchair and have been practicing walking with a physical therapist. My left leg and left arm/fingers are still weak, but with luck it's just a matter of time (climbing next year ?)

Tentatively I'm scheduled to go home on the 4th of October, but it could be sooner, depending on progress. I'll be in outpatient therapy for a while, but things are generally coming together.

The rehab gym has a computer which I am using to post here :) My geeky livelihood is such that consider it rehab to be using it for some period each day, as long as I use the mouse with my left hand, lol.

Mail sent to Memorial Hospital in Modesto was forwarded to my home address in SJ, and a friend brought it to me. Thanks so much for the card John - I do not feel worthy, but it brings up my spirit nonetheless. Jeff, I also just got the llama :D
