Cool idea for a thread (and lots of good pictures).
My wife's sister is an elementary teacher who just got the good news that her class size had been reduced to the 20s (had been 30s). Even so it looks like really hard work to me -- dozens of kids in one room but with widely different strengths and troubles; coping with parents who blame teachers for their own kids' behavior; buying supplies out of pocket; never enough teachers and too many high-needs kids -- but she does it enthusiastically and well. Not a climber but an ultramarathon runner, on the side.

The picture above, taken in the Kain hut, is of Conrad Kain, not YC. (Right?)

Jack McBroom (Hemet High School - Chemistry)....also an ordained minister. Bad ass climber....also holds the current 14ers speed record. Dear friends for life! Married me and the Rockcritter at Tahquitz (Jeff Salz "grotto".....last house on the right before Humber Park).
Rockcritter keeping Mooch in line.....enforcing the vows with a bamboo Chouinard! Pre-Jack's arrival! HA!

Brian,
Check out the guy who looks like tooled leather facing the camera in the Kain Hut. He like been around the block or something.
Jaybro, "The Offwidth Machine" also deserves mention. He's a champion Special Ed sub and has been known to be hard on his Jeep. He also has a Lucille fetish, but you didn't hear it here.

Me, b-school prof:
From time to time, I get to take my MBA students out for a 'leadership day in the desert'. Few things illustrate personal preference for risk like taking a running jump off the edge of a cliff:

Marty,
OK got it. I skimmed to quickly and thought you meant Kain was YC, then thought you meant Becky was YC...
...but now I see that the problem is that I can't read!

That's cool, we've been in school for 4 weeks already. Had my first debate team meeting today and think I have a few contenders. We'll see and we'll have fun along the way.

You seem to have let a few profs in so I'll put my picture in. But I taught in high school for seven years before returning to grad school so I'm also a former high school math teacher.

Total Perspective shot. I was going to post about how in Wisconsin here teachers are now considered public enemy # 1. Then I see your shot about your student dying. I'm sorry to hear this- it's tough when the little guys leave us too early.
I was at a grad party and I said to my students- well now you're done and off to college, so you can call me Dan- and they said "no You're always going to be Mr. Murphy."
what a world

On a different thread on the same topic a few years back I said, "Ex-teacher, ex-climber" I've found out that is not the case and while I don't teach in the public arena anymore I find myself in teacher mode in any number of different jobs and social circumstances. I've also been having (gasp) positive thoughts about climbing again. I just hope my body allows my desires the ability to do it.
I lasted 4 years teaching social sciences at Pasadena High School. It seemed to age me many more years then I taught. cheers to all that can and do

Waiting out Irene here, watching climbing flicks and the weather channel, and what do I see?! I'm in my 7th year, 6 years of science, 2nd year into the math scene. 3rd state. As far as I can tell, we are the last moral and academic role model for most. Many are called, few are dedicated to improve unless there's a monetary incentive. On the flipside, few are as happy with their craft as us! Teaching Climbers Unite!
