I didn't realize when I signed up you could have a user name ..

I typed in my name, and there it is.

After a week or so here I figured out you have to be very careful of what you say.

I am glad that I take full responsability for what I post on the Super T.

I was named Susan after my great grandmothers housekeeper, who was a really special person for my dad. However the curse of being named Susan is that in the 50's/60's or so it was sort of like the female equivalent of Dave. When I went to sign up for the tacostand "Sue" my actual name (+ also my rec.climbing name) was already taken. Quel surprise.

I didn't want to just use my last name as well as my first because the whole point of just being Sue was so that my students couldn't just google me and have a thousand or so hits of me saying f*#k on the internet (at least as the top hit).

I've never had many nicknames, but the utterly lovely Cameron Randolph called me "Sue-matisse" , since in my not-day-job I'm a painter. Ergo Matisse. I think of Cameron every time I see it.

amazing how gender neutral it is.

I was named after the patron saint of hopeless cases. St. Jude. Interestingly enough I was adopted at birth. When the nurse brought in the paper work and asked my new parents what they had chosen to name me, they said Jude. The nurses eyes widened and she looked astonished. That is already his name, was her reply. My birth mother had also named me Jude.

I had better keep it. True story.

I spent all of 3 seconds thinking up mine. I think I was a little annoyed that I had to make up one more username and password (I've got like 32 or so now to remember). I didn't realize people would think I have long shaggy hair, low tight pants and play loud music (definitely not me). But I've come to like the name. I even use it elsewhere at times.

I got a post-graduate grant to study Hindi Language in India from Uc Berkeley. My good friend and study partner there was named Jim. (now professor and chair of his department)

I called him Jim Baba and he called me Karl Baba. "Baba" is one of those basic society-kinship terms in india that can mean anything from Holy Man, Dirtbag, Grandad, pops, or Shiva-rastafarian.

In general, Babas are cool folks that will welcome you, make you a cup of tea, give you some sound advice (maybe even feed you) and wish you well. The visitor may leave a donation!

When I was a kid and first learning to sign my name, it came out looking like Jellowe. Ergo, in some small circles, I have sometimes been known as Jello.

In Nepal, however, my Sherpa friends call me Jeplowe.

It's my middle name. Allows me to be me, but not be too obvious (though I am caring about that less and less). Keeps me honest too, like others have indicated. I'll sign my full name on occasion if it feels appropriate.

Now, about seven years ago, I changed all but my first name... but that's a long story.

Truth be told, we are known by many names throughout our lives... dad, mom, grandma, grandpa, auntie, uncle, etc.

Long distance runner, what you standing there for?
Get up, get off, get out of the door
You're playing cold music on the barroom floor
Drowned in your laughter and dead to the core
There's a dragon with matches that's loose on the town
Take a whole pail of water just to cool him down.

Fire, fire on the mountain
Fire, fire on the mountain
Fire, fire on the mountain
Fire, fire on the mountain

Almost ablaze, still you don't feel the heat
It takes all you got just to stay on the beat
You say it's a living, we all gotta eat
But you're here alone, there's no one to complete
If mercy's in business, I wish it for you
More than just ashes when your dreams come true

Long distance runner, what you holding out for?
Caught in slow motion in a dash to the door
The flame from your stage has now spread to the floor
You gave all you had, why you want to give more?
The more that you give, the more it will take
To the thin line beyond which you really can't fake

Things I like:

Climbing
Running
Riding my bike

I would have put "ski" too, but then it would have sounded like I was pretending to be from eastern europe. And I too did not realize that I could have just used my real name, but I was too lame to come up with anything funny for an alias.

Wow a shout out in the OP.

Here's the thought I had when coming up with a name.

Skinner: Er, um, we need a name that's witty at first, but that seems less funny each time you hear it.

Apu: How about, "The Be Sharps?"

I just couldn't come up with one good enough. should have used my middle name, but the idea of using an actual name wasn't even on the radar.

I had a party in high school.
friends of friends of friends were there. it was huge. hole punched in the living room wall.
we had set up a video camera on the book shelf, to i think record 30 seconds of video every 5 minutes or so.
at one point in the video, is a guy talking to another guy, right in front of the camera, quoting Ferris Bueller's day off saying "you don't know Abe Frohman? The Sausage King of Chicago?"
and it cut off.
I always thought it was funny because I didnt even know who the 2 guys were.

(plus, who doesnt like some sausage?)

Borrowed it from Jethro Tull back in the early days of the wreck.climbing forum. A real steel monkey is a roughneck who builds skyscrapers. I've done a lot of different work, including digging graves one summer, but haven't done the skyscraper deal. But I like the song and it sorta goes with the climbing theme well. Oh, and the reason there's no "o" in there is because way back in the day, AOL wouldn't allow more than 10 characters in your signin name, so I had to shave one.

As the moon slips up, and the sun sets down,
I'm a highrise jockey, and I'm heaven-bound.
Do the workboot shuffle, loose brains from brawn.
I'm a monkey puzzle and the lid is on.

Can you guess my name? Can you guess my trade?
I'm going to catch you anyway.
You might be right. I'll give you guesses three.
Feel me climbing up your knee.

Guess what I am. I'm a steel monkey.

Now some men hustle and some just think.
And some go running before you blink.
Some look up and some look down
from three hundred feet above the ground.

Can you guess my name? And can you guess my trade?
Well, I won't rest before the world is made.
Arm in arm the angels fly.
Keep me from falling out the sky.

Steel monkey.

I work in the thunder and I work in the rain.
I work at my drinking, and I feel no pain.
I work on women, if they want me to.
You can have me climb all over you.

Now, have you guessed my name?
And have you guessed my trade?
I'm cheap at the money I get paid.
In the sulphur city, where men are men,
we bolt those beams then climb again.

Steel monkey.
