Werner - yeah, I'm planning to go to every place in those books! Ya gotta have dreams!

Munge - SPH? Not the full set of guides for Tahq. Sketch might have the really rare one from the '30's or so.

Sketchy - if you're thinking about clearing some of the shelves and have some older or odd guides to places, let me know. Maybe we can deal. Only offering this as a way to keep the info all in one place, not a nudge for you to get rid of any. I'm hoping to get all of the general guide info up on the web one of these days.

Impressive Steelmonkey. I noticed you had The Dome Drivers Manual. An awesome guide for Enchanted Rock that I love thumbing through. It's not being published anymore. Maybe you could help. I've been looking for another out of print guide for Enchanted Rock. Stranger Than Friction by Dale Bergeron. Would love to have a copy of this, but cant seem to find any copies of it.

Only places I know of directly to search for the odd out-of-print guide would be:

 Chessler Books in Colorado
keep an eye on Ebay to see if the one you're looking for pops up
Search some of the online used book stores, like ABEBooks

Wow, Greg, very impressive. Really nice condition, too. Plus we know you have a killer collection of climbing mags and AAJs, too!

I'm inspired to post some covers for guides in my photos that had blank spines. Some of these are kinda obscure, like that strange Tahoe Select guide. Plus I had to slip in my own guide. One of the coolest is Randy's guide to the guidebooks, though!

1. Bay Area Rock (Jim Thornburg), Consumnes (Bob Branscomb), Vedawoo '87 (Lane Kopischka), Table Mountain (Grant Hiskes), Index Town Wall (Clint Cummins)
2. Climbing Guidebooks of the US - CA/AZ (Randy Vogel), Bishop's Peak (Peter Gulyash), City of Rocks '89 (Dave Bingham), City of Rocks '90
3. Select Tahoe (Bob Sutton), Wawona (Mark Spencer), Boulders & Cliffs Skagit/Whatcom (Dallas Kloke), Shades of Blue NE Ice (Peter Cole & Rick Wilcox), Santa Barbara/Ventura (Stephen Tucker)

In Steelmonkey's collection each author averages 6.1 climbing
areas. Allowing for some authors that only treated one area,
doesn't that mean some guys are putting out guides to, say,
10 different climbing areas?

Tarbuster - bear in mind, this is just the guidebooks. Not all the other books and mags o' fun.

Go here for my Climbing Mag collection...

Check out Little Sue on the front page!

scuffy - It is true that lots of guides have many areas within them...usually guides are divided up by chapter by area. But its sorta arbitrary how I did some of them, mainly because in some cases I just didn't feel like typing a whole ton of them in (so I made the area just the overriding location). For the Yosemite Big Walls guide by SuperTopo, I have El Cap, Half Dome, Leaning Tower, Liberty Cap, Lost Arrow Spire, Mt. Watkins, Ribbon Falls and Washington Column as the areas.

I have all the info in a database (was just something I was playing around with) and can easily generate any kind of report from the info if you're curious about something.
looking sketchy there...

Steelmonkey -- Very impressive (and super cool). It is great to see so many guides in one place. There is a lot of history and fun in guidebooks.

If I wasn't shiftless and lazy, I'd (1) post up some guides; (2) actually inventory the guides I have (I don't even know how many anymore -- especially since the great sell off of 1988); (3) finish/update the bibliography to all the US, Canada & Mexico guidebooks; or (4) finish Josh Central.

Clint: Nice guides all, but you got to love the Dallas Kloke guide, a classic.

Clint,
Love the colors and homemade quality of that little collection. Is Spencer's Wawona guide all of 2 pages?

Randy,

Yes, the Dallas Kloke guide is quite entertaining in its own special way! Maybe one day when I'm in the area, I'll have to check out those Walker Valley Boulders and see if they have been reclaimed by the moss.

Nate D,

The Wawona Rock quite is quite thin - just a warmup for Southern Yosmite, I guess. The pages are not numbered, but if you count the inside cover art, there are 26 pages, describing 42 mostly short routes.

and Jaybro, is this the 1/2¢ you were looking for?
