Wild Bill,
historically I was thinking Mark Richards for surfing - coming out of retirement and winning at Waimea etc.
Who else for surfing?

I'm glad that Nate C took it well when I pointed out in email that, besides Gill, most climbers' abilities extend beyond their feets.

That video of Laird was pretty sick, but I bet even he would give it up for the Duke.

Nita, c'mon, golfers do NOT qualify as athletes. Christ they'd probably have a stroke if they had to sprint 100 meters.
This guy takes the cake for me:

I watched this dude/s in the Ironman a number of years ago. Not many things brings tears to my eyes but this sure did. There is probably no athlete on the planet, ever, that has even half of this dude's drive and dedication, not to mention love. To hell with all the fame and glory guys and gals, they all pale in comparison.

Eugene Sandow. One arm, one finger pulls on each finger evidently...
Off the top of my head--Pele, Jordan, Gill, Gullich...oh yeah, and Nagano:

Jesse Owens bested the perfect race and sent the Fuhrer to the showers. (Edit: In Berlin.) Pretty rad.
Muhammed Ali stood up for what he believed was right, kicked ass, and made funny rhymes.
Pat Tillman should be rated as the raddest football player EVER.

Oh, and in that vein, how about the 100,000 or so kids who sprinted out of the water and onto a beach in France on June 6, 1944.

426, that Nagano clip is great. He has such a casualness in the way he moves.

Records are always slowly and incrementally broken. What you have to look for is an athlete that utterly transcends all competitors. Someone that blows everyone else out of the water.
Being an Okie...I vote for Jim Thorpe. Sac and Fox Indian.
At the Games' closing ceremonies King Gustav V told him, "Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world!" To which Thorpe reportedly replied, "Thanks, king."

Glad you enjoyed Wild Bill. DanO in the original post is a given; I was lucky enough to climb with him when Cave was all kosher.
He was a real class act; I was in a dangerous situation on fixed gear when he walked up and said "you should lower (n00b)---I'll put your rope up....those nuts fell out in the last earthquake...we just put them back in but they are junk!" After that I belayed him working out Psycho Monkey---it was the first time I caught "real" whips.
He was, (among many other things), a heckuva bassist...

Roald Amundsen and party, with their little ski trip to the South Pole in 1911. Perseverance, skill, intelligent planning, endurance we can't even imagine, and courage of the highest order. Who is ever going to beat that?

Radical, we have already ascertained that golfers are NOT athlete in any way. BUZZZZT.
I find it interesting that everyone is saying Ali, and no one is suggesting Joe Lewis.
