And Tarbuster answered well, especially by using the wine analogy. Coffee has such a variety of flavors depending on so many variables, much like wine. Try and find a coffee house that will let you sample a number of varieties side by side and you will see what I mean - amazing the difference. There is a fantastic roasterie in Boise - Treasure Valley Coffee - that I would visit when I lived there - 15-20 press pots sitting above their respective bean bin with little dixie cups you could use to sample. Going down the line sampling each one is what first opened my eyes to the amazing variety that exists between beans and roasts.
Now, I savor one cup of GOOD coffee every morning - getting up with the sun and watching it rise over the lake with a warm cup of brewed bean in my hand is a great way to start things off.

Being a busy new York working gal, my coffee(lately) has been procurred exclusively on the go. Lucky I am, to have a corner store deli that keeps drinkable cofee(that is to say - not burnt, not watered down, and not absurdly priced).
Starbucks coffee tastes bad, and the thought of shelling out $5 for a sugary "coffee drink" is not within my realm of experience. Not that I can't; it's simply that I won't. Even if I am in an unfamiliar neighborhood, and getting low, needing a caffeine fix, if the line at Starbucks is longer than one person - WITH their wallet out ready to receiev their change - I refuse to patronized the store.
One problem with NYC deli coffee is that often the guy pouring it is that they like their coffee like their women.....light and sweet. TOO MUCH SUGARRRRRR - BLEACKH. YUCK-EE.
Cheap-assed deli's sell hot water that has some appearance as to having had water run through ground beans, but there the similarity to cofee stops. More disappointing, if it's possible, than not getting that toy you'd begged for - for days and weeks - for christmas as a little kid.
At home, I thought I had some level of cofee commitment, grinding my own beans, preferring Zabar's French-Italian Esspresso roast. But reading this thread I can see.....many of you wouldn't touch my cofee.
My most humbling coffee experinece occurred this last December at JTree. There was this cutie dirtbag, Jay. He was there with Cosmic Cragsman and some other people, and he came by my campsite with his mug in hand, like a hungry begger. he said "I just knew you'd have decent coffee.... They've got NesCafe over there...."
Poor guy was looking rather whithered, but I had to break the awful news. I had instant coffee too....
When I travel, I found that - frankly, my coffee sucked. One day, I bought the Whole Foods 365 brand coffee powder and was duly impressed. Note - I can function, sometimes for days, without coffee. Unlike, I assume....some people.
I cooked it up, and told him my secret(adding real(really real) cocao chips) to make a mocha coffee. And, dried milk - The horreur, no doubt, to.....some people.
He didn't show his dismay. But I noticed he didn't come back the next morning. Guess he must have figure there would be.....some people....somewhere....in HVCG, that knew from coffee.

Re: ed's comments about vienna roast and coffee as a diuretic
Not to push home roasting too much, but with a 15 dollar popcorn popper, you can very easily get a vienna roast, just stop after the 2nd crack is well underway, they have a great pictoral guide on the website below
http://sweetmarias.com/roasting-VisualGuideV2.html
And I don't know if folks have seen the recent evidence suggesting that coffee/caffeine may not be a any more of a diuretic than water in moderate doses (=two cups of coffee). Though we all know from personal experience that this is wrong...
http://advance.uconn.edu/2002/020722/02072207.htm
there are more recent studies by the same guy with the same conclusion too, he was funded by "big coffee" so take it with a grain of salt...

I know about the recent studies... unfortunately for my partners (as I tolerate caffine abstinence well) the image is stuck in my mind and won't depart...
I've never tried roasting my own beans, but that seems a bit obsessive to me. Somethings are ment to be enjoyed with a minimum fuss. Unfortunate for the ravaged ecosystems that support the agriculture to give us our daily cup of joe.

I first used the Keurig at work and liked it so much I bought one for home. Now we can go with any flavor we want. I like the darkest ones and about 4 of their teas.
It just does not go camping very well.
Happy Saturday, sucks to be indoors.

Yes, it does suck to be indoors on a Saturday... anyday for that matter. It's is gloomsville here today in Pasadena. I feel like I'm in the Sunset District in San Francisco or Seattle. Time to break out more coffee and the prozac!
Hey Chaz, the old guy complaining about Starbucks was hilarious... made my day. I grew up in the Northeast and knew a lot of people who really do talk like that.

Weird how spam bumped the thread. Weird!
Anyway, I like good coffee, but I'm kinda ruined, in that any ol' cup will be fine. I drove trucks for a long time. Mostly bad coffee.

My faves in order: Arabian Mocha, Tanzanian Peaberry, and Ethiopian Sidamo. I find the Java/Sumatra coffees a bit too "flat' for my taste, and almost any East African to be superior. Kenya is also great. On the other hand the Javanese coffees add lots of body and a nice smooth finish to the blends called Mocha-Java.
Should all be made by French Press with coarsely ground beans. A shot of 1/2 & 1/2 smooths out the bitterness a bit making the morning coffe the highlight of my day.
