Thanks for a good go!
The naysayers that think they can do better should put up or shutup.

Whoever would sue you because some jackass posted something offensive is a full blown jerk. America has always been sue happy, and it has affected many sports. Europe doesn't have the problem to this degree. I don't know why.

Thanks Chris, sad to see it go but it makes sense. It's all part of the evolution of the web.

I will say thanks to Chris for starting and maintaining the forum...it’s been fun and i have met quite a few interesting people I otherwise wouldn’t have met.
I have to say, however, that I remain suspicious concerning the real reasons for shutting down the forum.

I will miss Supertopo, both for the climbing content and magnificent photos that appeared with some regularity, but also for some of the debate threads, like "What is Mind?", where a bunch of people with disparate backgrounds and views, managed to post up some very, very interesting links. Nothing lasts forever, and I understand that it is and has never been a money-maker, but I'm sorry to see this forum closing up shop. Thanks, Chris, for carrying it forward for as long as you have.

Sorry to see this end. There are some wonderful people I have met and climbed with from the taco.
All great things must end eventually.
Thanks for hosting us for so long Chris.

Thank you, Chris. This has been an incredible source of information, recollection, nostaliga, aspiration, history, and stoke.
I really appreciate everything you've done to continue this as long as you have.

Thanks Chris, and RJ. Corralling climbers into a manageable space, fit for polite society, may have been too much for anyone.
I’m sure all options have been explored, but would a library be subject to the same copyright laws? There really was some history worth preserving. Some stories that will never be told again too.

JLP, in response to this quoted post:
Something important is being thrown away because they didn't figure out how to make money at it.
JLP wrote:
He actually did, through gear reviews, something that started here in this forum and has since moved to other sites RJ manages currently - and according to CMac's enormocast interview - they're making money.
Even though, JLP, you at times have been a grumpy ass (who's often spot on when it comes to technical appraisals of climbing, climbers, and all manner of things),
I have to agree with you here, again, dammit! Ha!
When speaking of profit/loss, I think it's disingenuous to decouple what the forum (as a useful loss leader) did to support the cash flow of the Supertopo project at large. I don't think they can be fairly separated. Of course, now that the forum has proven itself a head-on liability, it has to go. Understood. But I wouldn't blame it on lack of profitability as an independent unit within the umbrella of the business model. Once it becomes a thorn in one's side, a really BIG thorn, and not just a garden-variety burr in the saddle, then yes.
Ed Keller wrote:
What about approaching the American Alpine Club, and/or Alpinist Magazine, and/or similar, to get support to keep the entire archive- WITH photos- available? And/or continuing the forum?
This is certainly the right thing to ask (and something I would also very much like to see), but from what I understand, CMAC entertains too much legal exposure by going down this path. Asking for this is the right thing to do, and I've done it, but nonetheless I see it as pissing in the wind.
We are damn lucky he has decided to archive the forum in static mode, even without the pictures. Praise be to Allah for this! (Or to CMAC, as the case may be.) This way, it's still an asset to the overarching business model, no? Sort of a lose-win-lose-win.
And the ongoing amount of account deletions and self-defections along with requested deletions of content was REALLY biting into the historical repository.
I've been seeing it as I struggle to archive.
This was the time to shut it down.

Thank you for hosting SUPERTOPO Forum for 18 Years. When it started it was a tool better than email for rock climbers to connect on good subjects. However all the digital platforms have been taken over by trolls obsessed with their own hateful views. Like a party, that gets too noisy late at night, its time to shut it down.
This may well be the crux of the biscuit, in a nutshell!

I just went and looked, my first post on here was back in 2004. Not a whole lot of things in my life that I've been involved with for 15 years. Thanks Supertopo for everything, the beta, the slander, the laughs, all the wasted work hours here at school lol. Take care...

Kicked the habit some years ago but Supertopo was a huge part of my life for many many years and it made meeting many people and connecting in so many ways
14071 posts, back from the very beginning. Whew
I'm grateful for all that and sad some other entity couldn't take it over, even something like the climbing museum (granted Ken isn't mr tech but maybe he knows somebody)
any way, but ups to Chris mac who I also met through this medium and the whole experience including learning through flame and dialog
Yur all gonna die!
And so is the forum i guess
Best wished to all
Peace
