The big cat that attacked Travis Kauffman in Fort Collins on Feb. 4 was a male, between 4 and 5 months old, based on an examination of the animal's teeth, a necropsy performed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife veterinarians found.
At the time of the attack, it probably weighed between 35 and 40 pounds, the veterinarians found. By the time of the necropsy, the mountain lion's remains were only 24 pounds, because it was partially eaten — most likely by its two surviving siblings, Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesman Jason Clay said.

One article used the term "kitten" to describe the mountain lion he killed. Not sure if it was so small as to be called a kitten.

^^Nothing, except these animals try and take prey down from the back. There have been face off with these cats face to face, but not a head on attack, even a large male won't take a human on straight on. Curious that the fella has scratches on the face. Other folks are wondering if he might have cornered a young cat/kitten and it was forced to fight. I was suspicious when I first heard the story and my suspicion has only deepened. Not that it matters, but it's interesting.

seriously doubt that turning to face a cat in attack mode will save you... I lived with a miniature Asian leopard hybrid for 9 years. pretty much nothing stopped him if he was in a mood to attack. certainly he would try to get you when you were not looking but if you turned once he had started his attack he always finished...

I was very quick and Beasti only weighed 12 lbs. he got in weird moods and would start with the low growl. once he made the decision to attack he never backed off. Get him behind the neck and toss him out in his outdoor enclosure he would come in 10 min later all friendly rubbing on you and purring. Drew blood on me several times a week. Only reliable way to get him to let go if he got into you was to bite his ear really hard. it really bummed me out when he attacked me as I could never figure out why and a way for us to get along better.

Yeah, that DNA thang is a bitch! 🤣 See where that dood in Czechoslovakia got munched
by his nice kitty just last week? Yeah, his kitty weighed 450 lbs and was named Simba.
Recent studies have shown nature trumps nurture with humans most of the time in many facets, too.

Yikes! That doesn't bode well for the survival of lions. A couple dead kids and historically that's the end of the kitties.
Bad kitty...
