Well, no-one is talking about 'sanctuary cities' right now. Assuming Trump backs down from his wall, this whole shitshow has at least raised the issue of immigration in the public's mind, and both sides are going to have a hard time avoiding it (like they've been doing for years and years). For the conservative Right, it's been a longtime burning issue, but the GOP politicians have known it's political suicide to approach it, so they've done nothing more than bluster about it.

This time, though, may be different. I don't think Pelosi will get away with simply saying no to his wall, and then letting the whole issue fade back. It's too hot of an issue now, and it's due to get some attention.

Edit:
And in fact, Pelosi has stood by 1.3 B for his wall from the start. Schumer at one point bumped up to 1.7, but then he quietly backed down to 1.3.

I wonder if the Democrats are taking the long view here.

The timeline runs like this, Democrats encourage and champion allowing migrants from Latin countries into the US pretty much unfettered. These migrants settle as immigrants have historically done, and once comfortable, have children. Those children are now legitimate US Citizens by right of birth.

Eighteen years later, this wave of new first generation Voters remember how the Democrats gave sanctuary to their parents and they vote straight Democrat from then on.

Nancy and Chuck have a 20 year plan.

Ricky, that plan has worked to perfection in Cali since 1958,
hence we have the highest poverty rate in the nation.

Trump et al made the wall a defining symbol of his presidency and their platform (such that it is), as such, my express hope is Dems hold tough and it never gets built. And I'm pretty sure that's Pelosi and Schumer's game - humiliation over the most visible symbol his delusional supporters cling on to. Crumble the wall and his supporters will scatter in disillusionment by 2020.

Don’t take credit for something you haven’t earned. California is merely in the middle of the pack.

I won't post pictures or spell out the name.
Got to say though,

Lorenzo, perhaps you’ve heard the term ‘everything is relative’? Well, it’s true in economics
as well as physics. The Supplemental Poverty Measure factors in cost of living, which might
not affect you, but it is very relevant for the poor. By that metric California is Numero Uno!

‘We’re talking’: McConnell and Schumer attempt to defuse shutdown
There’s growing hope that the longtime Senate operators can end the stalemate fueled by Trump’s border wall demands.

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/01/25/government-shutdown-mcconnell-schumer-talks-1125401

Chuck Schumer emerged from Mitch McConnell’s office after a 30-minute meeting on Thursday afternoon bearing a wide grin.

“We’re talking,” the Senate minority leader said as he walked back to his office.

After five weeks of mostly radio silence, with Washington reeling from the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, the two party leaders are finally in a room together. And it might be just what's needed to, eventually, end an impasse sparked by President Donald Trump's long-running quest for his border wall.

Baby steps.

Drop the insistence on his useless, selfish wall and let the talks begin on real immigration reform and border security.

Trump planning shutdown announcement
It wasn't immediately clear what the president might say, but the remarks come as lawmakers look for guidance on shutdown negotiations.

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/01/25/trump-shutdown-announcement-1125529

President Donald Trump is expected to make an announcement about the government shutdown early Friday afternoon, according to multiple administration and Capitol Hill sources.

It wasn't immediately clear what the president would announce, but the move comes as lawmakers of both parties are looking to the White House for guidance as they search for a way out of the 35-day partial shutdown.

**
A White House spokeswoman did not immediately respond to requests for comment. White House officials cautioned that the potential announcement was tentative.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, who met with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Friday and spoke to Trump on Thursday, said a series of airport delays that have rippled across the country are “signs of things to come” during the shutdown. He’s been urging the president to endorse the idea of reopening the government to have a three-week immigration debate.

Airports are getting snarled, the economy is at risk, and public opinion polls are tanking for his wall (if not Trump's 2020 hopes). This could an interesting announcement.

WWDS(What Will Donald Say): "We have great pilots. Tremendous pilots. These men can manage without the Budget-Sucking ATC badgering them at every turn."

Of course, in ALL CAPS.

But seriously, if this doesn't get Little Tyrant Trump to shut his mouth, take a seat, and let the federal employees get back to work, I can't imagine what will.

The talk is that Trump's announcement could include a plan for him to re-open the gov't for a short time to start talks on border security. That's a major reversal for him, but since his 'my way or GTFO' approach has failed miserably, he's prolly finally smelling the coffee.

Word is that once it's been re-opened, it would be tough to shut it down again (although the Debt Ceiling issue in March will provide another opportunity), so he may consider wielding the 'National Emergency' declaration as a cudgel.

Edit:

Trump plans shutdown announcement amid signs of a deal
The agreement would fund the government through Feb. 15 while negotiators work out a larger immigration and border security compromise, sources said.

President Donald Trump is expected to announce an agreement to temporarily reopen the federal government after the longest shutdown in U.S. history, according to multiple people familiar with the tentative deal.

The agreement, which has been hashed out with congressional leaders, would fund the government through Feb. 15 while negotiators work out a larger immigration and border security compromise, the sources said. The deal does not include funding for the border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. White House aides and others close to the process cautioned that state of play remains fluid, adding that Trump has been known to change his mind at the last minute.
