I believe I read the bit about him bailing out and the crew landing in "Fortunate Son." Allegedly the book was researched and fact checked but who knows. Definitely not trying to spread any false stories. Was interested to see if anyone else had read that story.
Dana Carvey has a good story of GHW inviting him to the WH and laughing about his parody of him.

It was also revealed that Hatfield pleaded guilty to embezzlement in 1992. All presidents have flaws because, they are human.
One thing that Bush lied about was his comment about supply side economics. When he wa running against ray gun, he called it voodoo economics. Once he became veep, he said he never said that.
That's called Faustian behavior syndrome, but all politicians do it.
all former presidents, except ray gun, look good compared to the one we have today.

No, I rate them on their careers in the political continuum with president as only one of those positions. H W was already in the decline but still had a career that is impressive.
Criminality, that's another subject, but H W ranks nowhere special. All presidents and top ranking politicians are on that scale.
H W got away with more than most.
So yeah, I rank presidents according to breadth of career. 25 years of working in international policy has done that to my thinking. In my gig it works.
Perhaps if I were american I'd think otherwise.
