Maybe a more equitable and morally defensible policy would be to support and work toward a nuclear-free Middle East. I bet there would be widespread general support(with a certain obvious exception).

I thought that's what was happening. Like the nuclear free Korean peninsula.

WBraun, Let me help you out here: IT WAS A FRIGGIN JOKE! Chiiirist! The only way to stop nuke proliferation in the ME--including Egypt--is to stop Iran from getting them. Any practical ideas out there?
Israel does do some of our dirty work; it also does dirty work for Western Europe et al. If the Western Europeans would come out hard ass and help, we might be able to stop this getting out of hand; but they won't. When Israel does the dirty--if, the world will condemn them forthwith and quietly smile under the table.

keep in mind nuclear bunker busters were developed only recently - if Israel uses them at all they either
1) are in violation of the non-proliferation treaty
or
2) have a nuke program of their own.
damn facts...;-)

Israel has probably had nuclear weapons since the late 1960s or early 1970s, and likely tested one in the south Atlantic in late 1979. Estimates are that they have 100 - 200 weapons of various kinds.
Israel's nuclear arsenal is one reason why most Arab nations have let their militaries (relatively) decline in strength over the last 25 years. The only ones that have posed a credible threat in that period were Iraq, and Iran. Neither of which has a border with Israel, and they were busy with each other 1980 - 88. No win situation - Israel has superior weapons and training, 110% backing from the U.S., nuclear weapons as a last resort, and has largely "tamed" neighbouring Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. And all middle east countries have more pressing problems, whatever the fantastic rhetoric, and have learned the hard way that an over-strong military tends to create problems of its own.
From the perspective of some in the middle east, especially ideological zealots, possession of nuclear weapons would even things up, and get them more respect.
ps Whitey rightly points out that Iran isn't an Arab nation, although it has a significant Arab minority. From the perspective of Israel, the important things are likely that it's in the middle east, and a threat.

You all are a bunch of bloodthirsy freaks, making it sound like waging nuclear war against countries around the world is our right. What do you really know about Iran? Ever met an Iranian? Yeah, their leader is a stupid loudmouth. Sound familiar? All we have to do is isolate them and wait. Nukes? You remind me of General Lemay.

Personally, I loved the letter he wrote to us. I couldnt imagine under any pretext GWB writing a letter (stop right here, that would be impressive) that spoke so succintly and down to Earth.
Instantly spun into a madman's rant, the letter, imho, was a noble gesture to us to look past the BS being stuffed down our throats and see them as we should see ourselves...people trying to get through this crazy life we all lead.
Warmongers...we get what we deserve.

Ksolem,
Seems we been trying that. Maybe you just came out of a lengthy hibernation. I'll tell you what: call the UN and see if you can work something out.

Mimi says...
India is not a state sponsor of terrorism and other nuke countries have not stated that they would share the technology with other Islamic countries like Iran has. And no other nuke country has continued to say how a neighbor should be wiped off the map. Hindu reprisals against Islamic attacks and Pakistan's rogue scientist are exceptions rather than the rule.
care to substantiate those statements?
on India's relationship with Iran (feels kinda like India's relationship with the former Soviet Union).....
"The United States has made very clear to India that we have concerns about their relationship with Iran," Ms. Rice told the Senate hearing."
....Singh also hosted a visit to New Delhi by Iranian Vice President Isfandiar Rahim Mashaee in late March. The two agreed to strengthen cooperation, especially in the energy sector. India is proposing to take gas from Iran via a pipeline that will pass through Pakistan.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline is "a win-win proposition for Iran, India, and Pakistan," that could serve as a durable confidence-building measure, creating strong economic links and business partnerships among the three countries.
any relevant comments on the violation of the Iran-Libya Sanctions Act?
as for sharing.....
any relevant comments on the Halliburton/Oriental Oil Kish relationship? segues nicely with the gas pipeline into nuclear technology through Cyrus Nasseri.......
as for the wiping of the map....do we get to count US and Israel?
and as for a climate of reprisal......
"Pakistan and India can choose to aggravate or prevent a weapons competition. Unless they constrain their nuclear weapons research and development programs, these programs could create institutional momentum within each country to build and test nuclear weapons. And if either country tests or deploys, the other is sure to follow, with dangerous consequences for the security of South Asia and the rest of the world. A test or deployment of nuclear weapons could also cripple current efforts to stop other developing countries such as Argentina and Brazil from "going nuclear", and perhaps even undermine the viability of the Non-Proliferation Treaty. Several nations may find it politically difficult to be considered inferior to Pakistan in nuclear matters".
and as for striking specific language with a signing statement to at least figuratively prohibit the nuclear relationship between Iran and India from developing, can i assume you were burying the lead to protect a political position?
