Blurred the photo for respect to Neebee, but there's more where that came from Floppy.

Uh ok, floppy, if you don't want to play nevermind. There's a sheep grazing just outside which seems like will be more fun than you.

In my wife's family most have been competitive swimmers and everyone (parents, brothers and sisters) have at some point been certified and worked as a lifeguard. One blustery, off-season day her brother was on a beach on the Outer Banks and performed an ad hoc rescue without any gear available. He saved a life. All of us understood what this meant, how brave but dangerous, even foolish what he'd done was.

That stretch of Big Sur coastline is serious business and rule number one for rescuers is to figure out how you won't be the second victim. This one is particularly awful because feels like classical tragedy: once the LZ was identified as a manageable hazard (obviously, it wasn't with that sea state and tide condition) the ensuing events were almost foreordained.

such a sad day for all those involved. the water can seem so peaceful, yet it has such power to take us out and away. A prior freak rogue wave accident comes to mind.

The week before, 2 young UCSC students were swept off rocks and drowned north of Santa Cruz. You don't have to be a daredevil to fall victim to the ocean.

Sad stuff. Condolences to all.

Starting friday, 1/22 we experienced three days of exceptional or "king" tides. At the lowest, they were +3 ft. In addition bouy reports showed swells of 3.5-5 meters from 288 magnetic...IOW aimed directly at west facing beaches. Pirate, the jump itself might have been well within your friend's capabilities, but there was a considerable lack of appreciation for the sea state; and it doesn't count unless you stick the landing.

Btw, for those unaware, the significant wave height is the average of the highest 1/3 of the waves, so a 5m wave should indicate a fairly large swell. Additionally, approximately 1 in every 100 waves will be 2x the sig wave ht. One in every 1,000 waves will go 3x. All you need to do is take the avg period and do the math to figure how often you're going to get wacked.

I'm sorry for your loss, but this was completely avoidable.
