Obama seems pragmatic, and centrist. I wish he would have done more, like he did in Bristol Bay. See below.
Still, considering who he deals with, maybe it was the best deal he could get. It looks like he is spinning his visit the best he can. However, the money and oil keep flowing, and our world isn't what it was 150 years ago. Seems to keep going in the same direction too.
I really hope the Native American groups call him out. Does the name really matter if coastal tribes no longer have any land?

Sadly but too predictably, Obama's decision to push the change to Denali has drawn the usual negative reactions.
"He's not done enough about climate change, or environment, or Native Alaskans."
"He's moved too aggressively on climate change and environment, and he will destroy our economy, which is based on coal and oil."
Basically, many seem to think that if Obama's for it, then it must be a bad idea, as some of the news this morning shows:
--------------- "Obama's move to strip the mountain of its name honoring former President William McKinley drew loud condemnations from Ohio lawmakers, including Republican Rep. Bob Gibbs, who said he planned to work with his colleagues to see what they could do to stop it.
'This political stunt is insulting to all Ohioans, and I will be working with the House Committee on Natural Resources to determine what can be done to prevent this action,' Gibbs said.
House Speaker John Boehner said he was deeply disappointed in the decision to rename the mountain."

If Bush had suggested this, Boehner, Ward, & Fox News would honor his vision.

What if he had really put himself out there to block drilling, even if it was just a symbolic fight. After losing, he visited the arctic, spoke about climate change, and called the mountain Denali. They talk about legacy towards the end of a presidency. Or he could hope to get a mountain named after him :)

Ever been there, Chief?
The West Butt is definitely a cattle path, but the place is still pretty awesome. There are LOTS of really cool places on the mountain that are spectacular, and you won't see a single other person.

Who knew so many people felt so strongly about this?
I've always gotten a kick out of people who referred to Mt. McKinley as Denali. It seemed so pretentious. Like the common practice of mispronouncing crevasse.
Maybe we should rename all of our natural treasures to names used before Europeans savaged the land.

Pretty much anywhere other than the West side.

98.5% of people have no idea of why that mountain was renamed, what is used to be called, or who the hell McKinley actually was.
Until it hits the FauxNews media and the House of Repubs (same thing), then it becomes another reason to hate Obama.
Edit:
I did a short stint on the VIP climbing ranger gig for the NPS back in the 90's on Denali- we were the last patrol on the mountain for the year, so we got to fly all of the Krap® that was at 14k back to Talkeetna via Chinooks. The 'throne' over the shitter goes back, too...there was a 6' frozen sh#t-stalactite under it...and it had been moved several times already that season!

Did you know Obama suggested naming many of the Hawaiian features with the names of US presidents?
Yet another reason to hate Obama!

The chinook flight path was from 14k, down to 7k, where we picked up all that shite, too- then down along the Kahiltna and out to the flatland tundra. One of the most memorable views, though, was sitting on that pile of Krap® and looking out the back end of the Chinook with the Kahiltna & Foraker in view.
