I don't get it.
I've seen multiple forums go down the toilet because single owners refuse to have any sort of moderation. WTF is the deal with that?
Dr. F's threads constituted a significant portion of the traffic on the forum and the traffic they generated and he himself will be missed.

igd:
they absolutely did make a decision to delete every post...
there are lots of examples of threads to this board where the original post was deleted but the thread as a whole is still archived, even if you can no longer post to it. [coz's south face of half dome and mighty hiker's squamish history thread are a couple off the top of my head]
in this case the whole lot was scrubbed...

Yeah, I think the internet is the modern soapbox. What other format do we the common slub, have to voice our opinion? Maybe superdumbo is a little backwater forum centered on an obscure and meaningless hobby, but it is the principal of the matter. Some forums are read by millions. I mostly avoid conflict and have never had my voice stifled. But, those who choose to stir the pot often are.

While we're mentioning the people who contributed to the religion vs science thread,it should be noted that some of the most thoughtful and time consuming contributions were done by Ed Hartouni from whom I learned a lot of science. Hopefully he kept copies as they were at a level to be publishable in a book of science for laymen. And no one can accuse Ed of not contributing enough climbing content to this site.

It really is a shame. The taco has a very cool user group of climbers but it is consistently one of the worst climber's forums. The climbing content is so diluted by all of the crap from trolls, has-beens, and never-were's that it's hard to stomach. The culture of rudeness and dismissive insults spreads from the non-climbing threads to almost all of the relevant discussions. I don't care what any of you think about politics or religion, and it's certainly not why I come here. If Dr. F's banning helps move the forum in a better direction then it's a good thing, but some moderator's are not a bad idea either.

[coz's south face of half dome and mighty hiker's squamish history thread are a couple off the top of my head] that is strange. perhaps you are correct. perhaps the moderators took the extra step to save those threads and didn't for Dr. f's.

Well, sometimes the back and forth and trolling on the OT threads gets a bit much.
And Craig was fairly guilty of having a LOT of OT opinions. But he's definitely a climber(unlike LEB for instance). And this is a forum for climbers to chat about stuff. Virtual campfire and so on. Don't know that I'd visit very often if it were just TRs.
I do suspect the chats with the admin were a little more pointed than described in the first post.
But I've also got a problem with deleting entire threads that don't have significantly inappropriate content. Ban Craig if you want. Don't dump entire threads.

Wow. I'm just completely...nothing. I just don't care. It's the f*#king internet. Is this little fun house of manufactured drama really anything we should seriously care about? I must be doing this wrong.
I couldn't agree more. ^^

i like craig, he's done a lot for socal climbing and has been a player in climbing/skiing and now field science communities in cali for a lot of years.
the "republicans" and "religion/science" thread had to be soaking up a huge percentage of the management time for the site's owners.
i can only imagine what a relief it must've been for the mods to press the nuke button.
my best guess, though, is that those threads soaked up a lot of the toxic crap that would otherwise find its way into each and very thread. sort of the way yosemite valley has helped to protect the other major sierra corridors by absorbing most of the impact.
the technical term used to be, "sacrifice zone."

But this should be the norm! If DrF gets booted then only HIS words should be ousted.....
Maybe he's sharpening up for a point?

Oh FFS, not another special snowflake with a Goodbye Cruel Supertopo post.
If ST had the moderation some seem to desire then Hashbro would be history by now. The point of showing someone to the door is that they DON'T continue posting, not even through their buddy.
Such drama, such hand-wringing.

As a once-prolific poster / contributor here, I haven't been around much lately, owing largely to the vast amount of off-topic, self-absorbed spewage that has generally taken over the forum. [/rant]
I am genuinely curious to know what climbing related content the person in question has ever posted. Because I don't ever recall seeing anything along those lines...
Anyone? [cue crickets and fade to black]

What some here don't seem to understand is since the Gilchrist "incident" the management modified it's user banning script to delete all contributions and threads by that user and completely wipe the system of any content they ever posted.
Wml lost a bunch of his tr's after he got the boot, every story ever told by Scott Cosgrove has been deleted, old threads started by people who have been since banned but were classic threads that were well liked.
This heavy handed policy is exactly the opposite of retaining history as others have said...
