Micronut,
I respect your post and your beliefs , even though they differ
from mine... good on ya'. You are on a higher road than most
certainly more than Flip-flop who spews hate and seems intent
on letting everyone know he's pissed. You have found happiness.
Hey Flip flop Wilson: grab a beer , chill brother .. it won't
matter to you 100 years from now.
BTW.... I'll tell you what " pure goodness " is ... a newborn puppy.

Well, somebody sure murdered their own faith back a ways.
Believing in religion in the name of Jesus Christ (insert your own preference here) and believing in Jesus the man who was against the religious lies and power of his day are two different things.
Jesus the rule breaker, aware of the plight the person suffering I believe in. Jesus was unacceptable and killed for being incorrigible, I believe this as well.
In a completely scientific society that was sterile of religion, people would divide into factions and subscribe to different beliefs and grab for prestige and power, because that is the way of people.
Some would care, be selfless, enlightened, create, dream, and the coolest of them will put up ground up stance only first ascents.
The perfect world is not coming here, so enjoy life and care.

I have faith that people of faith will never accept the "faith based", but different, beliefs of others.

But, but, but
I'm exactly like that
"Jesus the man who was against the religious lies and power of his day.....
Jesus the rule breaker, aware of the plight the person suffering I believe in. Jesus was unacceptable and killed for being incorrigible." -clinker
Why do you hate me? I'm just trying to protect you and our collective children from the evil religion of today.
I have faith. Faith that humanity can be much better when we stop tolerating religious liars.
I'm still butt-hurt about 1000 years of the Dark Ages, I guess. And the 2000 years of Bible wars in Jerusalem hurt my butt too. And how the Nazi's needed god to get the killing machine going, also hurts the butt. And the endless genocide of the natives of the Western Hemisphere by the Pope, also hurts my bottom. And the sad reality that American Christers are so war happy that hurts my bottom's feelings.

I heard this song on the radio and listened to it for half a day before I realized that I was listening to a song about Jesus and not a song about sunshine, as I'd initially thought. Somehow this annoying religious pop song made me realize that the comfort I derive from sunny mountains, the passion I put into my scientific research, and the support I receive from my family and friends probably feel very similar to the joy and support that religious people find in their religion.
It doesn't really matter where you find a source of happiness or a sense of purpose--if you've managed to find that, though, I think it's worth admitting that you're damn lucky. It's a struggle for many people to find that sense of purpose. Some people find it in Jesus, but I think it's more common for people to think they're supposed to find purpose in religion, not find it, and then just feel guilty, as if this is some personal failure.
I understand the sentiment--religion brings you a lot of happiness, so you assume that it could also help provide a ray of hope for someone who is depressed. But a person suffering from depression isn't going to feel joy from religion. Nor are they going to feel joy from the warm rays of sunshine, a kind hug, or a romp in the mountains. They're depressed. The things that used to hold purpose--be it religion, family, a hobby, whatever--suddenly seem empty and devoid of any meaning. They're not depressed because they didn't try hard enough in their search for meaning--rather, the depression is a gaping chasm that prevents any forward movement in that search for meaning. It needs to be treated as an illness, not written off with well-meaning (but ultimately harmful) suggestions to "just be happier."

Okay,
I suffer from a pedestrian-type fact-based depression. Not the " I want to kill myself" kind or the " I need a higher power" kind. It's the " Don't throw bombs at kids or I'll stomp a mud puddle in your chest." kind.
Believe it or not, I think that I'm friggin hilarious. I apologize heartily because I know that my wit cuts like a knife. A sh#t knife.
P.s. If you don't know the story of the sh#t knife then lookitup. It's genius.

Cat t, Well put. I appreciate your input. But just a couple thoughts. I have seen first hand people come through the heavy wet blanket of depression and who have lived radically different lives on the other side of it. A couple of them are here on Supertopo. John Elezarian is an amazing guy with a wild testimony that he has openly shared here on the taco. I have family members who have been through similar journeys and it can be transformational....beyond anything that is medically explainable. Not that it goes away, but that there is hope beyond the despair and light in the darkness.
This is simply not true as a blanket statement. I have seen the opposite many times. I have seen the change. It happens. Thoughts like that are what compelled me to share this thread.
And I have no pretense that major depression is a clinical illness for many. I'm a doc. I'm well educated on the pathogenesis of the different facets of the disease and the current thought on what we know as a medical community about depression as a whole. And there is much we really don't know. I just know how much suffering can be involved with depression and to fully rely on the medical community or ourselves for the answers can often be a dead end for the human condition.
Thanks again for your thoughtful reply. I think Flip Flop just needs a hug.

Plenty of scientists get depressed, I'm guessing mostly the ones that make
atomic bombs and cell phones. My college roommate was from Los Alamos
where the suicide rate was astronomical.
