Just responding to some of the postings I've seen. I haven't read all of this. Regarding the fusion...weakness in the triceps is usally from C7 or the C6/C7 level. Werner asked about the fusion...basically, a neurosurgeon would go in from the front and fuse the C6 vertebra to the C7 (or another level if that is the case). He/she would either use bone taken from John's pelvis or cadaver bone material.
Fairly lengthy rehab (I'm a physical therapist)and the outcome is usually good. Some limited cervical motion.
If he is indeed covered by auto insurance they should cover all the expenses unless there are some extentuating circumstances.

I am very happy to say John does have a “catastrophic” insurance policy from Blue Cross. As many of you know I posted that John did not have insurance.
When I heard of this, today, I was both elated and very distraught. When the terrible news surfaced about the accident I made some phone calls and offered to help if fund raising was needed. It was needed, and is needed. However, I misunderstood and John does have some health insurance.
I sincerely regret misleading anyone and saying untruths about John’s insurance status. I will learn from this mistake. I will gladly honor any donations made. Please contact me at 760 937 1492 and I will make right.
I was asking John about his car insurance and discovered he did not know I had posted any information about his insurance status. Since people have asked, his car insurance was liability only.
John does still need our support and help.
Discussion has begun about a Steve Karafa memorial fund or scholarship. John has pledged all unused money raised will go to this effort or another non-profit charity.
Please continue to support John’s cause, despite my error. It goes beyond money.

{{ And Blue Cross/Blue shield has one of the best reputations about payoffs. No arguments from them. They were my primary insurers for my wife's neck and my back work and they were stellar! }}
Actually when I broke my back in '93 after cratering from 75', BcBs denied just about everything on my claim and paid next to nothing. They also refused to cover my LifeFlight, stating that air-ambulance is not a coverable expense... This was in 1993 though, so hopefully things HAVE changed, and for the better.

No need to apologize! JB needs our help regardless of his insurance status. You didn't mislead anyone and your intentions are honorable and so very commendable! I will continue what I can locally here in the Mammoth/Crowley area and keep dropping off all funds raised to MMS. Keep up the great job Dave and Autumn!!!! And, THANK YOU!

Hi Tim, I am just touching base. I know everything is going good for you and your end. Ours too. John's seeing our love and its helping, I am sure.
He actually has 5 broken vertebrae in the cervical area. They scheduled him for surgery for this Friday. Because he has health insurance he is seeing some great doctors. The surgery will go in the neck and they will spread the muscles rather than cut them. The operation will be with a microscope and the prognosis is good. The strength to his tricep is expected to return over a few months period. The doctors said most cases would provide 50% to 90% of his strength back in 3 months or so.
