There are several precious moments I would gladly give back.

Examples?

Yeah, if Five Ten or La Sportiva or Petzl could sell heaps of tee shirts in the Midwest
the young woman in the video would be getting paid already and sent to Rocklands for the season.

It's all about apparel sales.

That's why in surfing you have kids in jr high making more coin than their parents and spending paid winters on the north shore and boat trips in Indo, etc.

Climbing's still a fringe sport,
Thank goodness.

GoalZero and in the beginning of the talk they mention they are outside The North Face headquarters building.

In 2013, I purchased a pair of Bridgedale socks and a pair of Smartwool socks at Rock and Snow, and a pair of EMS zip-off-leg pants at the Rock and Snow Annex(newly opened last year, R&S opened a consignment shop in a building near the main store). Nothing from Goal Zero or North Face. That I haven't purchased anything in 2013 does not mean that I am not their target audience.

and boat trips in Indo, etc.

Hey, I had a friend who got to do that. He said it was a great experience. They'd anchor off small islands, and the natives were very hospitable, treated them to all kinds of great food. And he said the surf was stellar.

Seems like most people that make money off of climbing do something else well. Writing, selling, guiding, photography, ect. Think of where the money is. Hunting, off-roading, golfing, photography, hiking, camping, fishing are all things that have people that spend money and sometimes lots of it. There are many more like skiing, biking, birding ect. Professional SUP boarders probably make more than climbers. Most climbers I know try not to spend to make gear and travel go farther.

That is why most people I know got into it is because it was fringe. Can't be both. I don't hear jgill and the other greats complaining. That's just the way it is.

Chess, tennis, cup stacking, racing, mma, boxing, dog sledding, rodeo if you want to make money do something else. I hope it stays that way. Climbing in the Olympics makes me gag.

Most climbers I know try not to spend to make gear and travel go farther.

And the culture is that, to varying degrees, even climbers with plenty of money try not to spend too much of it climbing--just not what the cool kids too. (There are plenty of exceptions, and airfare to exotic destinations doesn't "count.")
Because of that, at least, it seems like kind of a terrible business to be in.
(I spent far more in a few years of playing frequent golf than I ever have in my much more substantial climbing "career.")

Women climbers are lead about with a ring in thier nose by men climbers. Not sure what the dynamic is, but they are handled by someone. The diet, the next project or comp, and who films them, all subtly run by the boyfriends of them.

Its the truth. TNFs core consumers aren't even climbers. TNFs core consumers have one thing in common - annual apparel spend.

so true!

good to see north face clothing at Costco!

TNF's target audience gets the most use out of their goretex jackets when they have to park in second section of the lot at Stanford Mall or bar hopping in the Marina.

That's where the disposable income is. Most big companies don't really care about the "hardcore" (except for marketing). Hardcores are usually cheap or poor :) Noobs will spend some money at first and may or may not continue but that juicy 28 - 40 year old, without kids and a lot of extra money who participates on a regular to semi regular basis...

I agree DMT. I didn't mean it in a bad way. That's what keeps a lot of these brands alive and able to do R&D for everyone's benefit. Those folks kept me employed for many years!
