just a turn-of-phrase used to evoke an emotion.

I understand.
But it was central to yourself in conveying an important thing. And central to your readers's grasping of that significance.
The symbol was important. It helped to carry something deeper.

I don't agree with Deans' views on politics, and religion, but I know for a fact that he is not a racist.

I understand that... but that's not the context of the discussion. Just splitting hairs. Symbols, as discussed in this post, physical representations of culture or doctrine or ideologies, whether real or otherwise are 'not important to me.' That isn't to say that I don't use symbolism in writing, or that there aren't things that I care about.

If you took away the symbol of a Shield the idea is absolutely still there - putting everything on the line for glory or horrific failure. That doesn't hinge on the physical shield or it's inclusion any more than the exclusion of a hundred other symbols that inspire the same emotions. I also used "swing for the fences" and wouldn't have missed much if I mentioned a driver making a hair pin turn on a dangerous raceway. In fact, the idea of climbing a run-out as described itself is an analogy to to these other devices I might have used.

That's actually a small step in the right direction, being a downgrade from mandatory execution.

Regarding GWB's Africa policies, from ABC:
