I didn't read much of the original thread since I wasn't in the mood for rants that day. It does surprise me that it got shut down by the Mac given the normal climate of this site. Venting, volatile spew and angry accusations are central to many, many threads here on this site that don't get shut down. The basis of the dispute (minus the volatile spew) is worth discussing.
Did personal info/email addresses get posted? If so, it crossed the line and I can see why it got the God-chop.

Chris Mac specifically said
"we're not the place to air the dispute".
Leaving out "the" when quoting changes a lot.

But since none of us are sure what exactly caused the deletion it would seem this thread is highly likely to step over the invisible line, too, isn't it? The odd thing to me is that it was axed just at about the time when it seemed like we were going to get Frieh's side of the story (I never saw his one post). People will put less time & thought into posts if they think they'll disappear at Chris' whim. BS threads with nothing at stake will still thrive though.

"John, who were the primary companies involved here, and which grants were they? I just want to know who I should start avoiding. And yes, these people need to grow the f*#k up. No one is forcing them to keep up a public persona, and no one is forcing them to try and use their public personas to make money. These people suck. They cant even take some internet sh#t-talk."
Frieh and company were awarded a Polartec Challenge Award, a Copp-Dash Inspire Award(AAC), two Muggs Stump Awards, and a grant from the Mazamas.

Maybe. But I'm guessing someone close to Chris asked him to kill it (AAC). It's got nothing to do with the dispute, just who's involved in it. Which makes it the wrong thing to do.

The OP's thread was a good one and raised valid criticisms, but the fact remains that he raised them on a privately owned forum. Whatever the reason it was chopped, it is the right of the owner to manage this place in any way they see fit.
With no intent to inflame anyone, if you don't like the way this site is managed, go find another forum (or start your own).

All the Imput in the world is ours. But we get no authority to make decisions. Ownership is ownership and we ain't the owners.
Not many websites succeed as well as ST. Success is fragile. I am glad we have what is here. I don't really know why cmac makes his decisions. I can guess but it's just a guess and could be way off.
Stuff like this happens on every message board and on most it's a lot more heavy handed than here.

Just because the owner has an ability to delete threads, doesn't make it the right thing to do.

Like I said sucess is fragile. Sometimes you are stuck with competeing interests and nothing but bad options when it's time to make a decision.
That's life.
F it.. I'm heading to Jtree.

Otherwise we have a totalitarian regime.
That is exactly what this is. I don't like that cmac deleted the thread. However, I 100% concede that it is his right to do so. This is his house, and I am a guest. So are you. We abide by his rules, or we can leave.

Different forums have different motifs. Since when has ANY editorial action here been offered an explanation or justification? Moderation here is opaque, that's just the way it is. Other places are different, but that's not necessarily better.
Look at it this way: Chris is pretty hands off here, so when he takes action, odds are he has a real reason he's taking the time to do so. What, you want an opportunity to tell him his reason sucks? Why, exactly, should he provide that?
Its just the way things are here, like everything lumped together in a single category, like the stories and input you can get from an amazing range of climbers.

What, you want an opportunity to tell him his reason sucks?
you have 2 opportunities: you can start a "why I am leaving Supertopo thread" or you can email Chris personally.

Typical
All the supertopo girls crying because Chris delete a thread.
Tough sh!t.
Ya all get side tracked so easily into limbo to nowhere, meanwhile the guy who ripped off John Kelly remains at large without his version of the story ......

Kelly seems most put out that those guys got grants for climbs using his photos and apparently not even climbing the line they said. I guess I don't feel like I know enough to weigh in on that? It appears that the AAC is playing fast and loose with the truth, but???
I'm actually most disappointed that it was clear in his email to Frieh that the info he provided was to be "on the down low" and "not to be sprayed about", then Frieh and his bud did exactly that. Sprayed to high heaven about the area. Did interviews, gives entire presentations for money about the area.
How is this NOT a betrayal of the climbing code? That's what I would be pissed about. That part is crystal clear.

Forums need moderation.
The moderating of Supertopo is definitely not heavy handed.
It's pretty rare that Chris decides he just doesn't want a thread here. So, maybe thou dost protest too much. :)

Yeah, its a completely secret area. Forget about Ruedi Homberger's coffee table book on the range...
Oh, hey, that's not my picture, I just want to be clear about it.

So... What would be an acceptable code of ethics to follow when applying and awarding these grants? The purpose of most of these grants is to somehow advance the sport, which obviously hasn't happened in this case, so what should be done differently?

I heard there was a new government program that would give grants to all climbers. Obamaclimb.
