Don,
I thought it might be an original Stoveleg made by Bill Dolt but I’m not sure. It does look like a Dolt (i.e. has the welded eye and size in the Dolt Hut catalog).
But Dolt didn't make the original Stovelegs. Those were made by Frank Tarver (1956) and Rich Calderwood (1958) and they had rings:

Here's an odd "piton" on the Wiessner Route, a 5.8+ crack on the summit of Noonmark Mountain in the Adirondacks. The guidebook Adirondack Rock identifies it as a 1"d lag bolt. It's only 10 feet or so off the ground. The book speculates that it was used to stand on, but the authors doubt that Wiessner, "being a purist" would have used such an aid. Incidentally, the crack is the hardest of numerous Adirondack routes established by Wiessner in the 1930s and 1940s.

mastodon, that beefy angle iron pin looks like some that Harvey Carter had made up, originally for Totem Pole, AZ. He made a trip to the Valley in early 60s.
Don't know exactly who made them for him, some metal worker in Colorado Springs? But the design looks about right, piece of burly iron, tapered, welded at the end. If there's any traces of gold paint, that'd be one of his for sure.

Let me see if I can get Dick Long, Jerry Gallwas and Dennis Hennek to come along too and we can have ourselves a grand forgefest with the camera rolling!
Please tell me you took SGropp up on his amazing offer...

Not so far but Jerry comes up this way fairly often so it is in the hopper.
Getting Dick or Dennis up here is much more involved.

After reading this thread, I need to re-evaluate the contents of my "retreat kit." It contains a great number of unused ring angles, Cassin verticals and horizontals and lots of old, soft-iron horizontals, wafersm etc. Maybe I should sell them on Ebay instead, and buy something trustworthy with the proceeds!

Hey John- Send me some pictures of what you have that isn't ring angles and I will trade you for alloy steel pitons. I have a pile of alloy blades from my collecting and lots of other stuff to trade if you are looking for bail pitons.
Cheers
