hmm... so 2007 total posts since I joined but 2.7 for the week. An odd way to present the data methinks...

Ed wrote "Basically I use Perl, if you want the details I can send you the script, but unless you are knowledgable it probably wont be interesting, and if you are, you'll wonder why I did things so strangely.

Nature nods in that all-to-knowing fasion. send me the hack job pahlease!

I meant status up to last week, spread over the whole week...

real quick...

550 nature May 27, 2004 2009 2.7 746

nature's first post, 5/27/04, which was roughly 746 days ago, with 2009 posts you get 2.7 per day average...

Instead of hacking the database commands, which I am relatively ignorant of, I just down loaded the web pages for the search on how many posts.. found the first post, extract the info out of the page and write it to a file. I then read the file with MSExcel and did the calculation.

I didn't look if the number of posts was less than 100.

I looped over the user "id" (nature's is 550).

Here is the perl, (EDIT I've put a link into the perl script...)

sorry that ST Forum took out the indents... how funny...

and also took out the stuff like < FILE > too...

I'll email you the script...

Lois, I think nature is in denial over his posting rate... seems pretty close to truth to me...

but anyway, yes, it is very easy to screw things up. One reason I try to post this stuff is that I am always making errors in everything I do. I depend on people to check my work... I am not a detail person. But I think I am ok on this...

I still say the number of characters typed should be part of the formula. Granted, that would be a huge task to compile.

alright, i see what you did in your code and now there is no denial. It didn't seem right but if I do a search on the word 'nature' i come up with 4900 or so posts. Around 4200 is where the results are from my username. Looks like about half the posts per each 25 resulting on the search page are due to author name. I better quit posting so locker can catch up.

wootles - not such a big deal, but time intensive with my "high speed" cable (perhaps I should have a T1 installed)... maybe if I'm really bored some weekend

Hmm? 426 is more in touch with the 'other side' than I realized, could it be from working all those, 'ladies' nights' @ Rocksport?

Sheesh!

Ed, surely you would have expected the extra spaces to get removed. After all you are viewing in on the WEB, which was sort of invented by a particular physicist.

Maybe       you could have used "& n b s p ;" to get them in, but that would have been a pain. But you were using perl.

Yes, you can see that it works, between "Maybe" and "you" above, and you need to leave out the spaces in the & n b s p; string.

The less than sign terminates input on the super top. Most likely this is a very lame attempt to keep one from putting raw HTML into the page.

I reported that issue to (and on) ST a long time ago. :)

FWIW - he uses tabs to start lines. Either way it wouldn't be worth the time. With or without indenting the blocks of code wouldn't make much of a difference. It's either line noise or readable. Thanks for sending the code, Ed. Nice work.

I changed the code to a link to the file... it bugged me to look at it so flat and ugly (not that I write beautiful code)...

I always assume that HTML is welcome, and that the full potential of the web is met by every site... alas, this is not so, and especially here on ST Forum.

My computer says there are 213,414 total postings to the ST website. Make that 213,415. Apart from poster primacy, relative and absolute, I wonder what else might be gleaned from this and all the associated information. Ed?

Jody, you may not believe it, but you cannot resist, apparently. Your stats indicate why...2714 posts with an average of 3.4/day. Wow dude... and that doesn't even count your other avatar(s)...

nothing rc.com about it, you gotta get some help!

I'm sure the id list is hashed, so there is a not obvious correlation with date of first post... and there are some avatars which have "left"... so the list is reorganized. Just a guess.

The list is made by the spreadsheet from data harvested by a spider... all I did was sort, and cut-and-paste into the Forum... I wrote the spider too (that was fun)...

So not so much work for me, though I do stay up late at night, usually, as is my habit.

first off i'd like to say i'm proud to be mentioned in such company. i've made a few 'lists' in my time but they are usually unpublished and seldom spoken of in my presence.

i would like to thank the good doctor and the academy for the honorable mention, my friend and what's left of my family, our commander in cheek, and of course GOD, without whom none of this would have been possible.

Over 1,300 posts in under one year, man I have to get a life. I started SuperTaco life as DPatrick but had Chris change it to Patrick Sawyer on November 2 (both are accurate as Douglas is my first name, Patrick my middle, but Patrick was already taken). So does that mean I have two handles or just one?
