As they say -the plot thickens! So Summit County SAR will rescue dogs but
Clear Creek County SAR thinks it too dangerous and declined Tony's plea to help
Missy.
Bet that Clear Creek County SAR knew of the 14ers.com site and could have posted comments for help, but they never did. Tony did not know 14ers.com existed.
Summit County SAR group saves dogs, woman stuck on Quandary Peak.

Nice pics of SAR dudes carrying dogs out in their packs!
If only Missy had been in Summit County rather than Clear Creek County!

The Summit County Rescue Group is a team of consummate professionals," said Sheriff John Minor in the release. "This is just one example of their quick thinking and willingness to go beyond expectations and get the job done."

Cras - You'd lose that bet because you'd have told the SAR phone operator that your next calls will be to every fracking media in Colorado if you don't get help.
Bad press is a million times worse than carrying a dog out of the mountains and elected officials know it.

A good point made on 14ers.com is that the dog would want to be home with his original owner, who are we to punish the dog for the actions of its owner? Piss poor judgment bringing the dog up, see that frequently on trails.

wow- I've been chewing on this for a few days.
The guy made a horrible mistake. He admits it. I get it... dog can't move.. he's got a human-teen-ager with him that he is responsible for. He lives out of state.. he has responsibilities that can't be blown off. He makes one effort to get a rescue that gets rebuked and doesn't know what to do.
What I don't get is the lack of further effort. The premature willingness to give the dog up for dead was totally lame. People LOVE dogs. People will move mountains to save an injured animal.
If this guy left a note explaining where the dog was in the parking lot, at the trailhead or at a local bulletin board explaining the situation... some locals would have jumped into action. He could have called the local newspaper. He could have googled the hiking site for the area and posted a plea for help.
Quote from one of his friends: Whomever knows Missy's whereabouts would be well advised to contact Tony and give Missy what she is longing for most right now.
Her person.
Missy's "person" betrayed her. I'm sure she loves her owner. She trusted him and, out of love, followed him until her paws bled and she could go no further, then she was left for dead. Sorry.. I don't think I'd return her to her owner and he deserves whatever punishment the law allows.

The dog had no tag. If she had, the first people who found her would have contacted the owner.
Dude didn't even leave a "lost dog" note at the trailhead(s).
Then, he leaves the state!
Hopefully, the animal cruelty charge he will soon find himself convicted of will include probation terms that should prevent him from owning any animals - including the dog he dumped.
Any time you take your dog ( or your kids ) climbing, hiking, riding, or whatever, you need to resign your self to doing a kid climb, a dog hike, or a kid ride.

I think Chaz said it best. Bill took me, Loki, and the baby up to a climbing wall. He carried a beach umbrella, diaper bag, and baby. He looked like a walking vendor. He hiked it all in, ended up having to carry the dog down from one cliff and catching me as I slid down it, then made sure we were comfortable and well tended to once we got there. He then hiked us all out, pulled me up the cliff, carried dog again and... If the dog needed to be carried all the way out, I am sure he would have figured that one out. That is what I call a responsible. No one was getting left behind or put at risk. Dog even had more water than I did.

given Missy what she is longing for right now
Knowing dogs, Missy prollie does still miss him. I had a German Shepard that was stolen from me. Three months later I ran into the thief and my dog, Sabb (Sabbath). I will never forget how crazy he went when he first saw me and his exuberation for the next few days. He actually recognized me first and went wild.
Problem is, Missy doesn't know, and probably never will know, what a Jackass this guy is for abandoning her where he did! Dogs rely on their owners. And for the most part, are completely dependent on them. D00d f*#ked up. He and his friends just don't seem to get it. You just don't abandon your best friend some where and leave them to die. Whether they are humans or dogs. I would have died defending any of my dogs. I wouldn't expect this of everyone, especially if you have human kids that are depending on you. But you should sure as hell make one super human effort to rescue or intervene for them. I was sick for months after eventually losing my dogs either to accident or old age (they do not live long enough) the first week or two were especially bad. So, I cannot fathom someone who would simply leave one somewhere with little hope of its survival and almost certain death. Knowing that it is still sitting up there and most likely will die a long, drawn out, lonely and terrifying death.
The dog is fortunate that it does not understand his previous "masters" callous and unloving behavior. Especially since GS are prollie the most devoted dogs towards their owners on this planet.
The d00d should be prosecuted,I hope it is forthcoming. And, as I have already stated, he shouldn't be allowed to ever own another pet period, let alone another dog. But the bottom line is, he surely shouldn't be allowed to have back this dog. He failed it miserably. Obviously he did not love it. That should be the first requirement of any dog or pet owner.
There is something major lacking in this d00ds psyche, imo! He should seek help.
Anyway, my prayer is that Missy finds an awesome new friend to care and love her. She will get over d00d soon enough. Especially if abundant love, respect and care is poured out upon her. She certainly deserves it after what she has been through!!!

The Clear Creek SAR must respond and rescue humans but does not have to rescue dogs.
Legally does that reduce dogs to the same category as left behind sweaters?
911: Whats your emergency?
CALLER: I lost my sweater. Its on the east side of Mt Bierstadt.
You guys have to help me get it back. I loved that sweater!
911: Sorry sir but we do not rescue sweaters off mountains in Clear Creek
County Colorado.

It's not at all similar to this headline case but ...
A friend and I once carried an 85-pound dog with hurt feet down off a mountain. That was quite an effort. We found a 10-foot dead pine for a pole, then suspended the dog under the pole using a couple of zipped-up vests, and carried the pole on our shoulders. The dog played the role of captured white hunter in one of those old Tarzan movies.
One complication was that the pole sagged and the dog's feet hung down so his toenails dragged on the trail if we didn't carry it high enough. The poor dog seemed dispirited and resigned to his fate, taking no part in the rescue.
And there were not one but 3 dogs along on that hike. The other two were more accustomed to hiking and suffered no harm to their feet, so they ran back and forth as if bemused by the circus.

Sorry for a sorta OT remark but it seems funny that some of the people calling for the harshest punishments for the Dog abandoning dude don't seem to mind at all that Mitt Romney carried his dog on the roof until it crapped itself and sold a dancing horse that had been overmedicated such that the Buyer had the horse tested, sued and Romney settled.
Sorta reminds of of all the double standards we have for animals. The outrage that one animal might be neglected while eating bacon for breakfast that comes from pigs whose intelligence tests smarter than dogs.
Just sayin' We humans are stuck in our conditioning.
Met some Chinese guys in Nepal who spoke about their Dog eating. Nice guys too. When a friend was a abroad student in China, her hosts told her a story about how the neighbors complained about the family dog barking. The barking continued so the neighbors did what was considered to be the polite thing, they cooked the dog and invited the barking dogs masters to the dog dinner so they could at least share the dog as food.
Peace
Karl
