I never said the feat was not impressive (S%@# I'd be lucky to hit 1 in 100.). Call anything you want a sport if it makes you feel better.

Hand-eye co-ordination challenge is sport.
Let's add arcade games, then.

I'll bet the 1 legged wrestler could do 5 pullups - at least.

It's not that I'm unimpressed with her skills, just her sport's physical demands in comparison to what the other ones demand. Night and f'n day. The contrast is a joke.

You go fire 100 12 guage shells, and let me know if you feel like firing another 100.

My guess is you'll be able to read "MOSSBERG" in the mirror for a week looking at the imprint stamped into your shoulder, and you'll want nothing to do with shooting ever again.

And if you miss more than one out of that 100, you're not only sore, you're a loser too. A sore loser. Beat by a girl.

She won by eight targets, or the equivalent of Usain Bolt winning the 100 meters by two seconds.

Is that a joke? It must be, because Bolt doesn't race a bunch of fat guys in the SPORT he participates in.

Maybe it's like winning a Scrabble game by 25 tiles, but it's not track and field.

Is there a softer, fatter, more out of shape athlete in the entire olympics - that medaled? Please post their name.

Didn't get the name, but saw an Italian in an archery event against the US who had a John Daly-like physique (I may be slightly exaggerating). Would stand to reason that being a lard butt is not only not a detriment, but could be an advantage in some of the game/sports like archery, shooting, darts etc. to give the player a nice, stable mass.

Having the same person be the champion at an event over decades probably suggests the event is more on the "game" side of sport/game continuum.

Not sure why people are getting worked up at the (generally mild) observations that we don't all need to bow down before Ms. Rhode's as the greatest athlete of all time. She's great at skeet shooting (or whatever the event is)--no more or less.

Edit--here's a link showing the gold-medal winning Italian archers:
http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/olympics/off_the_mark_team_loses_olympic_qyDLqQ0bmTMh0GKIXhS9mL?utm_medium=rss&utm_content=Olympics

I see the chubbiest Italian won his first Olympic medal 16 years ago. Another remarkable story of an "athlete" who can stay at the top of his/her game over the years? Or just another example of some guy/gal who is very good at holding something steady?

I placed ninth in what was effectively the national championship for mountain bikes.

So how is mountain biking a sport, and skeet and golf not?

EDIT:

Is Aid Climbing a sport??

And my guess is you've never actually shot skeet. Sigficantly less recoil in skeet load shells compared to a game load. Less drams of powder, less oz of shot...and showing up with a Mossberg would get you laughed out of the room...do they even make an O/U?

If hand to eye makes it a "sport", is darts a sport? Xbox? 'Cause I'm wearing it out on Call of Duty 4, where's my f'in medal brah?

I watched a special honoring her once and it showed her dad holding her upside down and she was shooting skeet ... inverted! She is one amazing athlete and a great role model for the shooting sports, great family.

Anyway, I hope she gets a lot of praise from her fellow Americans because this is a truly historic accomplishment! She is our modern-day Annie Oakley that's for sure!

Btw, tnx for posting this ... made my day!

Even skeet loads take a toll on the body, and shooting 250 shells gives a beating albeit a light one. It's a sport just as much as seeing how much weight you can lift, or how far you can throw a discus or ball. It takes mental and physical discipline in any sport.

Do they still have that fast walking race(not sure what they call it) event in the Olympics?

No, you're not getting it, you have to think more critically. Everyone who has thought about the issue agrees that there is no bright line as to what is a "sport" and what is a "game," but that doesn't mean they are all created equal.
Even if you think that skeet shooting is properly classified as a "sport," it's about as close to a game as you can get--it's right on the line, to put it charitably in favor of the skeet fans.

Weightlifting and track-and-field are unquestionably sports--they don't raise any of the "game" issues that skeet shooting, archery, pistol, darts, bowling, golf, etc. raise.

The only reason I'm getting into this in detail is I think some people are miffed that we're not quite ready to say that Ms. Rhode is the world's greatest athlete. The above is why, at least for me.

Edit: race walking seems sort of dumb to me, but the best analogy I can think of is to any stroke other than freestyle in swimming. Most people seem to accept forcing people to swim in inefficient manner (at least from a racing point of view) is a legitimate sport, and race walking is pretty much the same thing on land.

Here's Kim shooting at Oaktree in Santa Clarita. The owner built her a special field for her to practice. If you can shoot at Oaktree you have an advantage at most other ranges as the background is challenging. Most backdrops are sky not at Oaktree.

mostly shooting from low house, station 7

The field also has 5 stand(8 sporting clay type throwers) which we make into quite a game when you throw Olympic skeet in as well. Best of all it's open at night and has 32oz beers for $4 !!!

Uhm people arn't upset because Rhodes may not be the grreatest athlete in the Olympics. Whatever that means.

I'm upset because she's an amazing competitor doing something awesome that has incredible physical demands to accomplish at her level.

And people diss her? Cause she has cars probably has a high level of personal means at her disposal? Cause she's built like a brick shithouse?

Childish comments with no class whatsoever.

Is her sport as pure as a sprinters? No argument..

But damn what she does is amazing

WATCH and see for yourself.

How far off can your aim be and still hit the clay pigeon? Seriously, 50-100 feet out, what is the diameter of that shot pattern? Some of those pigeons look like they've been hit by 1 stray pellet.

I've done the skeet thing myself and didn't think it was too hard. I'm not going to win any comps, but in 1-2 days, I was killing most of my targets. She was sitting right behind the thrower as well in that video above, no tracking.

This would be more interesting if they were using rifles, ala biathlon - where at least you ski a bit first. This chick has some hips - looks like she could use a run around the block.

I don't see anybody "dissing" the woman. I see people raising legitimate question of what constitutes "sport" vs "game". It's impressive in the same way that a multi-decade darts champion would be impressive.

But to pretend that it is some "athletic" endeavor, and that anyone who disagrees is a "hater" or "dissing" is just pitiful. It's like the intertoobz specific version of Godwins Law - when you have no actual counter to the argument, just cry out "hater"...usually accompanied by some asinine graphic.

There's lots of silly sh#t in the Olympic GAMES. Synchronized swimming? WTF. Curling? C'mon.

Regardless of your favored definition of sport, what Ms. Rhode has done is an amazing display of skill, perseverance, longevity in the pursuit, and flat out bad-assedness. Works for me.
