Don's got one of the most contagious laughs I've ever heard.

Only guy I've ever known to look comfortable with a VW engine in his lap. He made being a bad ass look easy.

Hang in there, buddy.

Met Don up at Donner summit when he was mini tracking. Such a nice guy. He had a pretty damn good imitation of you Werner - you must have spent some time together.

All the best wishes for your recovery Don !

I just heard this shocking terrible news yesterday.
What route was Don climbing?

Jane,
You're in my thoughts, prayers, and heart. If there is anything we (Ed, and I ) can do for you on this end please ask. We are here for you.
Sending strength, and patience to Don. It's time for rest, and healing.
So sorry you have to go through this.

with much love, and respect.

Thank you to Y.O.S.A.R for any and all efforts you provided involving this incident.

I have always had a lotta respect for Don. The first time i did Outer Limits, in '74, he led it. Hoping and praying that he heals up soon!

Werner is correct:
He's pretty fuked up still.

Lots of injuries.

He's lucky to be alive .......

I spoke with Tom and Carol Carter last night: they had been present at the hospital and were preparing to go back down again.

I got a pretty good blow-by-blow of the accident and injury status, but I'd rather not repeat that here in the interest of avoiding any misinformation as it would be thirdhand at this point.

Suffice it to say there wasn't any immediate evidence of neurological issues pertaining to use of his extremities. I wanted to know this because there was mention up thread of damage to his C-spine. Head injuries have not yet been fully assessed, but they don't sound super-gnarly at the outset. So this is good news if you like, for the time being.

Once he gets moved, Dr. Tom(my) Herbert hopes to get involved, so this is a doctor whom we know personally and trust implicitly.

Here is a bit of good news about Don's condition.

Today Don was able to breathe on his own (without the breathing machine) and is holding his own with only a nasal cannula for support. This is a big and positive step. He still has a long row to hoe... and will need all your help and humor to heal over the next few months.

Don's got a number of fractures to deal with as well - but taking over control of his lungs is a big step towards his long road to full recovery.

He fell just about 10 feet above the 1st pitch belay (depending how you run it) on Quicksilver. He was casually talking with Ernie Milan and looking at the rack, thinking of getting a piece in when he just lost his balance for a second and pitched. He was not pulling a move. So, it wasn't a serious spot - but turned into one for Don.

Ernie got him to the ground and went for help.

He is very healthy and will need our attention this summer. So, for now lets give him room to heal and help Jane out in a couple of weeks when we hope he is home in Tahoe.

He's over the crux!
The punctured lung/broken ribs/induced coma to combat that stuff is sketchy business. So this is great news: that he's awake and breathing on his own.

But he is in the hospital with multiple injuries and that means he is still exposed, because mistakes get made, risk of infection and etc. So vigilance is required. This is where having Tommy Herbert in the wings to monitor and critique Don's overall care strategy is so cool. Dr. Herbert is a hospitalist and that's what they do: keep tabs on and tweak the big picture like a project manager. When the time is right, we hope to see Don moved to Tom's native hospital, where he will be officially performing this function.

Carter failed to mention that Don availed one of the nurses of one of our more endearing Western mudra...
Namely that he slowly flipped her the bird when she wasn't bringing him enough ice to sooth his thirst.

So, Mastodon is looking more and more like himself again and this is always good to see!

BTW: has anybody posted any of this on cascade climbers.com?
I have to think he's got lots of old pals over there who would like to know and send their best wishes.

Power to you, Mr. Mastodon!
All the best to you Jane. This is rough duty.
