Its very common in the summer to view satellites that appear like moving stars that change brightness. This can be a satellite or other space junk that is tumbling or spinning. If the period of rotation is right it can appear to blink. As the satellite moves into the earths shadow it disappears halfway across the sky.

In the Southwest the military conducts all kinds of secret tests.

In the early 90's every Thur morning we had the Aurora aircraft pass over the California Coast going about Mach 6 before it landed at Area 51. Nice Sonic Booms.

Was it a continous bright light, with blinking side lights.
What was the period of the blinking?

That device is about as bit as a babys fist. Not the ball you are looking for.

Was the guy rappelling with a rope bag. Common in Caving?

Hi Lois,

With a rope bag on stuffs the whole rope in the bag. The end that comes out of the bag is anchored to the wall. As the climber rappells the bag hangs off their harness. So the end of the rope is hidden in the bag.

If it was not a rope bag I am thinking they where rappelling with packs hanging off their harness?

Lois,
Your husband's impression especially makes me think of an
iridium flare. That's a reflection from the antenna (or is it
the solar panel?) of a series of communication satellites.
The angles of the panels is known, the path of the satellite is
known, and the path and timing of a very bright, short-lived
"flare" is accurately predicted (and published).
I saw my first one several weeks ago. It was as bright as the brightest shooting star, -8 magnitude. It lasted a few seconds
with a noticeable increase to max brightness and decrease to
darkness. Very "clear" with no afterglow at all.
http://www.heavens-above.com lets you choose any location, then tells
when you can see a flare there, and where to go to see it at its brightest. It also has stuff about the space station.

Never seen an Iridium Flare, but its on the list.

Also want to figure out when the space station transits the moon or sun.

Have to start thinking about Sibera in 2008.

I am thinking jet aircraft over Greenland.

Yeah, Juan, you want to see an iridium flare. The chart showed
that a bright one would show at one of my several locations (you
can have settings for work, home, habitual evening hangout, JTree, Tahquitz etc). The site tells you exactly where to look and the exact time of the event. It's cool. "Just up and left
of that treetop there should be a bright light in...15 seconds"

The tumbling satellites phenom sounds like a good one too.

Please advise?
