On my way to do trailwork, working on a project which will reduce erosion of the cliffside and assist in protecting ground foliage by "hinting" that people use the trail instead of tromping wherever.

But after trailwork, I will be driving my van which gets about 12mpg to Poughkeepsie and back - at least 40 miles round trip.

So.....

I can't hardly wait till our heating, air conditioning and driving habits are controlled. Those be some special times a comin'. Yep.

Me too. Since most Americans aren't smart enough to get it any other way. You do know that Americans suck more life out of the planet every day than any other nation right NWO?
You so against regulation that you'll fight a civil war for your beer swillin' BBQ sucking redneck cousins right to pollute as much as he wants?

Besides, I guess you missed the original point about trying to make a difference ourselves rather than waiting for the gov't to make more laws. But you don't understand that. You'd rather consume mindlessly until the gov't is forced to regulate you.
We spend an awful lot of time waiting for the city or the politicians to do things for us.

So, if we all do our part and lead by example, the good folks of China and India will follow suit. Uhmmm, yeah. Like that's gonna work.

You're right. We should definitely consume and pollute as fast as we can since that's what those greedy little chinks and head wobblin' Injuns are doing.

recycle, of course.

we live in the straw bale house we built ourselves 10 years ago. Our electric bill is 35-40$ a month and the gas (heat) bill is 10$/mo from May to Sept and peaks around 80$/mo in midwinter when it's like 20-40 below 0.

we do it everyday, and in some pretty fine digs.

there are no excuses.

I took a jet flight from LA to Denver, rented a car and drove 40 miles. In 3 days I will go the other way. About a gazillion gallons of fuel just for me!

On the other hand, I did turn the air conditioner off in the hotel room and open the windows. Same for the car the whole time.

I know exactly what you meant NWO. Why should I clean the dogshit out of my yard when my neighbors have dogshit all over the place?

The whole point of the thread was to ask what kind of things are YOU doing to make the world a better, cleaner place to live.

You're the one that brought all the "bad" things the Chinese and Indians are doing into it.

Talk about twisting dude.

Think globally, act locally. Ever heard of that?

Edit:
I'm asking, why it is we have to succumb to "save the environment" measures, when China builds 2 power plants a week?

Succumb? Is that what trying to do something for the environment is?

I am no apologist for the Communist Chinese government nor for their current environmental damage.
They are however well aware of what's going on and have made specific goals in their 12th 5 year plan announced this March.

Environment & clean energy
    Non-fossil fuel to account for 11.4 percent of primary energy consumption;
    Water consumption per unit of value-added industrial output to be cut by 30 percent;
    Energy consumption per unit of GDP to be cut by 16 percent;
    Carbon dioxide emission per unit of GDP to be cut by 17 percent;
    Forest coverage rate to rise to 21.66 percent and forest stock to increase by 600 million cubic meters;
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/china/2011-03/05/c_13762230.htm
For a critique of their plan

Can anyone tell me what the US goals are for similar problems?
I doubt it.
Ask any of the Republican candidates (even for dog catcher) what they plan do to about energy and CO2 consumption per unit of GDP. What about water consumption? Any goals for non-fossil fuel energy production?

In my opinion, we are now behind China in long term environmental planning.
So don't go beating on the "chinks"

Sigh. China is even beating us in long term environmental planning now.
Of course the proof is in the actual execution of this plan as well as enforcement. Given China will execute people for making unsafe milk, my guess is this plan might have some teeth.
Meanwhile in the USofA half the population is doubting the value of teaching science.

Sad sad days indeed.

What did you do for the environment today?
Besides bitchandmoan about those nasty nasty scary Communist Chinese? Buy anything lately from Costco or Walmart that was made in China? Maybe your Christmas tree lights? Nearly any computer product? How about your Apple or Lenovo or BrandX laptop? Where was your cellphone made?

China's economy is a reality, as is the government's new awareness of environmental issues. Their self interest is the economics of conserving their resources, reducing mortality, improving health, sustaining their agriculture.
Isn't it odd how US "conservatives" are the first to oppose conserving anything except their immediate financial self interest or their "America is #1" shibboleth? Goldwater and Buckley would turn over in their graves.
