Cruising the coast when it's flat-cool.
Riding out of the way spots-cool.
Unfortunately, kooks are trying to learn in crowded lineups, and the experienced just end up being greedy.
The trend had already gotten out of control 3 years ago when I split. Lifeguards and regulations followed.
I must say that watching sweepers cruise the harbor, fish way out on the horizon, and catch crap surf looked appealing. But I was already bitter, and the logistics and price, not to mention the stigma, kept me from pursuing sup at all.
I wish they'd all hit the lake.
Gotta give props to the heritage of sup and to those who ride heavy water or do long distance crossings.
Post rant edit:
To the original question, boring? Nah, I'd probably choose sup over a kayak on a lake, for the balance training, core workout, and view, despite the silliness of it all.
Oh, and, a guy I knew put a small video camera on the end of his paddle, went way out, stuck it under water and got some amazing, and frightening, footage of a large man in a grey suit... I'll look for the link- it made the MSN homepage.

Point Dume is killer area to stand up and paddle with a board.
Lake paddling is a fun workout in a different way! It's all about the stoke!

In surf, they certainly seem to be a advantage but where I see them most is when I swim at Ala Moana beach park, they even set up bouys to keep the swimma's separate from the SUP's. In the flat water it seems, from my humble view, to be for 200lb plus people only. I frequently see mid aged Wahine 4 wide talking as they gently paddle up and back.
I am just happy when I get myself out on the water.
Maybe in the morning...

I've tried it and wasn't overly enamored of the activity. It sure does seem to be popular, though, to the point down here where they're offering yoga SUP classes (?!) I even work part time in a freakin' boat shop where we sell the things and prefer the long boats...
if nothing else, the things might allow good access to marshy and swampy areas. again, I prefer my sea kayak or day tripper to a SUP board. If I'm in a marsh/swamp, I wanna be IN my boat, not ON a plank Admittedly, though, that may be my southern upbringing coming out full force as we DO tend to associate such topography with the presence of crocs and gators (and NOT the kind you wear on your feet and legs, thank you!)
I dunno... Time will tell; it always does!

Nohea, it does seem to be some what of a social pastime here in the islands with the tutu's going out and talking story while they cruise along.
Like I said before , just cruising.. flat water.. enjoying being out on the water.
Still plenty guys and wahine's can shred in the big surf. It all good fun,,

Here's the deal: the surf industry is quite popular and mainstream. So much of todays fashion is "surf" based.
However, these people that traditionally wear all this stuff(from coast to coast and everywhere in between, including land locked locales)are somewhat 'poseurs', but would love to be able to actually DO the thing. Surf, that is.
SUP gives them that feeling. "Hey, Laird Hamilton rides an SUP and so do I."
The industry is milking it for all its worth. Its booming because they're selling. MANY shops around here are now generating a TON more income by selling SUP's.
Us 'surfers' can talk sh#t all we want, but hey, if it gets people genuinely stoked thats a good thing, right?

Dr that's what they do.
i happen to know the guy who was out there SUPing. what they do is come in by the numbers then surfers won't mess with them. it's a big heavy board and you don't want to get run over!
