You went to A16 instead of REI?

Good on ya for supporting a local outdoor retailer instead of the big box.

Tawny

There are lots of lurkers on the site as well as those who post. If you post up your shoe size, there's a chance somebody will have some old shoes cheap.

Shoes are really the one critical personal gear need. A partner can supply most everything else

I guess my main reason for logging on here is to see if it is wise to buy used equipment or not. I am a dancer and my income is off and on and I am still not sure if I will really climb a lot but it would be nice to at least have my own harness and shoes.

Tawny - if there is a real Tawny - any shoes and harness are likely better than none, when you're getting started. The problem these days is too much choice, not too little, and lack of or inadequate equipment is rarely an issue.

The most important equipment is in your head and your heart. If you have that, everything else is likely to follow. Although a few good friends/mentors will help.

I like when strippers get on their high horse...always good for a laugh

Sorry you lost your dad. You should make him proud, leave this forum, and continue to strip in front of strangers.

Winning.

She never said she was a stripper. With nice nails, burning man experience and an aspiring climber I think she must be a ballet dance.

Damn, you guys are LAME!

A nice gal walks into a dive bar... Yes, it happened once.
But she soon left.

Y'all who are still trying to talk to her, grow up fer once, she's GONE.
And if you thought she was a troll, your judge of character is worthless.

Werner get's the prize post here though. Laughing hard at that one, thx.

I don't care what kind of dancing Tawny does. Many of you guys are less than gentlemen, and as long as that persists this place will continue to largely be a junior high sausagefest.

Tawny,
excuse them if you will. The thing about climbing is that it requires a child-like exuberance to value the adventure climbing provides.
It explains a lot about why the immaturity abounds.

Now, here is some good advice from a former guide.
This is all you need to purchase for a long time; shoes, a harness, a locking biner, a belay/ rappel device, a racking sling and perhaps a cleaning tool if you want to learn trad.
Spend the money on new items from a good store.
And one more thing, trouble is you can't buy it, common sense.

You see, here is the thing. In order to learn the ropes you need good partners.

Nobody will admit to being a poor partner. Everybody thinks they are good.

WATCH THE WAY THEY BELAY!!
Do they maintain the braking hand on the rope?
Do they maintain vigilance of the climber, or do they jabber?
Ask how many long falls they've caught.
Ask how many long routes they have pioneered.

Everybody wants to be a leader, but not everybody has the right stuff.
Don't be talked into stuff. Use your head. Take your time.
Live a long happy life. bona fortuna

doesn't sound like a stripper unless she works in a gay male club. theater or ballet would make more sense when you consider this comment.

as far as this thread goes, the only one who got to "inspect the goods" was the REI employee, and the JT-rats... and they haven't posted here...

...and no pictures...

So I haven't visited here in weeks, but I got a couple nice e-mails from good-hearted people wanting to give advice; nice.

I'm not a stripper...I do modern dance within the entertainment business, so you all can chill. I'm not a "troll" either....climbing just seemed like something fun to pursue. I was sent some info on Project Bandaloop, which is really cool looking stuff. I have done lots of stage aerial work...it's sorta my passion right now.

I'm adding a picture of our group at Burning Man for all you truthseekers out there. What's up with all the wierd suspicion here anyway?

Well, to put it mildly there is rather the time-honored tradition of trolls and poseurs here
which only serves to heighten the hackles of the cynical sophisticates here.
I'm sure your photo from Burning Man will allay many of their concerns,
whichever one you are.
