How many supertaco posters are vegan or vegetarians?

After watching the 14 part youtube post of the china study I'm leaning that way...

Met a 96-year-old man in Carmel Valley many years ago who crawled under his house to repair a broken pipe. I asked him his secret to such active longevity. Are you vegan freaks ready for this knee-bending humiliation? He said "Lots of red meat, a good daily cigar, two shots of damned good whiskey everyday, and plenty of sex."

So go ahead, pork out on your carrots and celery and cucumber water, and I'll see you at the Pearly Gates AFTER you've died BEFORE me, just pass me the beer, T-bones, and mayo before you depart!!

By the way, I'm swilling a really good strong brew this instant: Duvel Belgian Ale, 8.5% alcohol. Gives a good buzz fast, and it's yummy. Gee, I feel like I'm going to make it to 90 at the very least!

I found The China Study a compelling and incredibly well researched book.

Food nazis abound and in their fervor turn people off from investigating the possibility of small healthy changes that are sustainable.

I shoot for vegan and am flexible. The author of the China Study mentions that if you have some bread and there's an egg in it, don't worry, or if your host offers you chicken soup you don't need to turn it down. It isn't all or nothing. Rigidity in mind and body is just as unhealthy as corn-fed [edit-- and factory raised] red meat. Neither will kill you outright, but you probably won't feel as good as you could.

It was a tacoan who turned me on to the book, can't remember who. Glad to see it resurfacing here.

I'm still at "I'll live till I die. So what?"
Longevity is overrated.

My lady is an osteopathic physician, which if you are learned about the qualifications of a DO you know they are equal to MDs. Same medical school training, same internships, same residencies, and DOs are fully licensed to prescribe all pharmaceuticals, perform surgeries, etc, etc, etc. BUT, DOs actually are BETTER trained in hands-on diagnosis, and they are the providers of holistic medical care as opposed to allopathic medical care. Many doctors that many of you go to are actually DOs and you don't even know it.

So, she was a vegan for a few years and she got sick from it because of the protein and iron and other key nutrient deficiencies common to the vegan practice. She is now 100% opposed to the vegan dogma. She thinks it is unnatural and unhealthy. She is a meat advocate -- in moderation -- but she says eating meat is sensible dietary practice.

The food one eats is not about living long.

It's not about health either.

It's about consciousness.

It affects your consciousness.

You can eat good healthy food and live to 60,000 years and still remain an idiot .....

Actually, we're all killing our food, whether we're buying butchered meats, steaming vegetables, or gnawing a carrot to death.

Murderers, the lot of you!!!!!

Paleolithic humans ate fiber rich fruits and veggies and lean meat. We are genetically programed to eat similar foods, and the genes we inherit play a HUGE role.

My grandmother made it to 100 and her 2 daughters, my aunts, just died last year at 100, and 104. I can't imagine living that long, since I have trouble
at 65, just moving in the morning. Too much hard work.

^^This guy is vegan^^, gets most of his calories from fruits. No supplements.

This guy is 57, and has been eating only raw fruits, vegs, greens, nuts, seeds for 30 years. No cooked foods. That's about 5% to 7% of calories from protein. His trick? He eats adequate calories and works out an hour a day, mostly running with bodyweight exercises.

In short, when you hear people say you have to eat animal products to "get your protein", it's an instant clue they don't know what they are talking about.

That cartoon is hilarious, but images of fit vegetarians and fat meat-eaters do not explain what my body tells me. And one can easily find samples in the other direction. E.g., this guy eats an unholy amount of McDonalds (which my body does NOT enjoy), up to 3 times a day during training camp:

Different bodies need and can handle different things. Some folks are lactose-intolerant. A shrimp cocktail would swell my throat shut, and eating McDonalds like Ochocinco would turn me into Jabba the Hut, regardless of how much I worked out. But I'll never go vegetarian again. Not if I can help it.

I think that I eat a healthy, balanced diet but I would never get into extreme, raw only, diets- eating is too much of a joy. The Pennsylvania Dutch have a saying: "loving don't last, cookin do."

Right on Monolith. Our vegetarian household, we rarely if ever get sick. My friends grandmother a vegetarian her whole life, the oldest woman to run a marathon at 92 years young. She didn't start training to run marathons until she was 86! Here she is finishing the Honolulu marathon. Be the ball Danny..

monolith -- "In short, when you hear people say you have to eat animal products to "get your protein", it's an instant clue they don't know what they are talking about."

Yes exactly.

And vegetarian doesn't mean raw foods nor just vegetables & fruits.

The food for a vegetarian is available everywhere.

All one needs to do is avoid meat, fish and eggs.

Everything else provides everything one needs ......

thanks for your post, monolith. well done and so very true.

as far as food that kills you.

next time I have fugu at my sushi bar step on up and I'll make sure the food kills you in less than 7 seconds. You'll enjoy the sweet flavor of the fish.. that is... right up until the neuro-toxin kicks in and you topple.

and for you locker... I'll kill you with my coffee.

Last year my my M.D. told me I had borderline diabetes, that shook me up, so changed my diet and subsequently lost 40 pounds. All I did was cut out:
most sugar
no processed food
very little fats, so no chips, pretzels, ect.
no hamburgers, no fast food.
no coffee because in order to drink it needed lot's of cream
no more white rice and white pasta, switched to whole wheat and ate the CORRECT serving size.
the correct serving size of meats, which is significantly smaller than most people think, palm of your hand.
no soda-that was actually an easy thing to give up
no fruit juice-so many empty calories- instead ate more fruit!
Didn't drink alcohol, easy for me 'cause not a big drinker anyway
no more processed cereal-difficult 'cause I loved this stuff
Rarely ate red meat
Decreased portion size

Increased intake of veggies and fruit. I didn't starve simply ate healthy and it was amazing how the weight just melted off, also didn't increase my exercise, it was simply eating heathier and as a result my blood work is now perfect.
Trust me, it was not easy, the first few weeks were tough.

Increased veggies and fruit

Try using BAKED tofu in place of meat if you have a protein craving. Teriyaki baked tofu is a great substitute for ham or other meat. It slices well as it has the consistency of ham, has virtually no taste except that of the sauce(like teriyaki or other) and does not spoil very quickly. I take sandwiches along on trips with it that are still good 4 days after I make them. Awesome stuff and packed with protein, and does not have the negative effects of meat. Little known secrect, they sell it in the Valley store as well.
