Santa Cruz Classic - Day 1
Bernd Roediger and Morgan Noireaux help kick off event
Over 70 riders from all over have gathered at Waddell Creek, just north of Santa Cruz, to compete in the first event of the American Windsurfing Tour. Despite light wind for most of the day just enough breeze kicked up late to get the event's first two heats in the books. Head Judge Matt Pritchard sent the junior division out who put on a show for the crowd lining the cliff. Heat one started with Nick Dudet picking off a solid wave and taking the lead. From there it was a battle of wave selection with Morgan Noireaux, Dudet and Jordan Reid duk]ing it out.
Heat two marked the competition debut of Harley Stone... the 12-year old son of former world champion Josh Stone. Although underpowered he toughed out the heat against Bernd Roediger, Jay Watermeyer and Sean Williams. Roediger picked the wave-of-the-day right at the start of the heat and is looking to be in top form for this competition.

Bernd wins single eliminationIt was an action-packed day at Waddell with all the single eliminations nearing completion. The one final so far was for the youth and may have been the best heat of the day. Bernd Roediger edged Morgan Noireaux in an epic battle. I'm sure the double elim tomorrow will be just as exciting.

Masters Final:
Heat 6 - Brian Caserio, Reed Nelson

Amateur Men after Round 2:
Heat 13 - Ingrid Larouche, Vinnie Armato, Jordan Reid, Nick Dudet
Heat 14 - Reed Nelson, Eric Sorensen, Troy Collins, Brett Greene

Nathan Mershon
Jazz Glickenhaus lands Air Chacho... SICK!
Insane trick of the day goes to Jazz who landed an Air Chacho in his second heat helping him advance to the semifinals. Congrats to him for pushing the limits and nailing one of the toughest moves around!

Looking forward to Day 3...
The beach at Waddell is packed and we're looking forward to another killer day on the water. Follow the action at facebook.com/americanwindsurfing and twitter.com/windsurfingtour.

Hey O Man,

I'm going to be on Kauai in 2 weeks and if time allows I might like to get myself back out there - do you know any of the rental/instructors over there to recommend? I'm not going to bring my board or anything probably just my harness.

I suppose Anini is about my speed right now, not Tunnels or one of the harder areas since I haven't sailed in a long time.

Mahalo!

Crusher I sure wish you were gonna be on Maui. I'm the head instructor for Windsurf School Of Maui and I could help you have a great time getting back in the straps.
I know that if you do get a chance to do some sailing you'll be stoked!
Post up on this thread when ya get back or sooner.
Have a great time on Kauai!

BTW: Check out this really cool write up about the AWT on Da News Blog http://danewsblog.blogspot.com/

Yeah! Too bad not Maui this time...I have lots of good memories of Kanaha. I'll definitely post up if I go (or not), we're sure to have some nice pictures of the scenery anyway.

I've gotten calls from several windsurf mags, and a bunch of windsurf sites wanting to run my AWT piece from SA. I don't even windsurf. Come on, fire up guys!"

Windsurfing is about stoke, such incredible experiences in the waves sometimes, you feel like you are floating afterwards.
O-man, ever sail the southside other then kihei or the nw side past the harbor?many strange and interesting places to shred when the conditions are right and the wind direction weird.

The south side is hit or miss and can be great. I have sailed hapi-o-pu(sp?) Embassy Suits and S-Turns park. I rarely take my wind surf gear over there when I go. There was a day last month that I went over and surfed, I would have had a way better time wave sailing than I did long boarding. I still got a ton of great head and better waves.

Am I the only one a little put off by this thread? I'm a windsurf/kiter myself - and I'm into the open forum concept - but I feel like o-man has sort of dropped in on our world and made it into his free advertising venue.

I guess its when I see words like "shred" and "stoke" too many times I think I'm looking at some Windsurfing rag whose business is to "fire up" teenagers so they will buy more gear. Something to do with tone.

One of the things I like about this forum is that most of the people here have at least a little grey hair. Their perspective - or at least mine - has changed over the decades. Hype doesn't sell anymore. Actually I can say that is what I like about the Santa Cruz windsurfing scene too. Most the guys there are pushing 60, sailing like pros, and not making a big deal about it. Cool crowd.

There, got that off my chest, and you got a bump for free. ha

Studly/O-Man,

One day Mr. Crusher and I were hiking out the King's Highway, past Big/Little Beach and watched some guy ripping it up off (past) La Perouse Bay. Looked like he was having a blast - I think he would have had to sail pretty hard upwind to get up there but then could head back downwind with the waves. Maybe this is one of the places you guys are talking about. I was pleasantly surprised to see him out there.
