How is the snorkling in Somalia. I bet they have some nice beaches, better yet is there any climbing on those beaches. Maybe we could turn it into Thailand then all the pirates would have jobs and would not want to kill us.
I think that I need to stay out of politics.

Thanks, Gene.
Even though they wipe their asses with their hands, pirates probably all have the same 3g iPhone I just got ( only they've had their's for a year now ).

Since when do the pirates represent Somalia?
This falls under an already declared war.
EDIT
A long and a short gun, Ron?
You're kidding right?
In Africa I can buy RPG-7s, grenades, and something belt fed.
(and that is just with pocket change)

Zero tolerance for pirates: agree. Sympathy for the victims: agree.
But, and you folks will call me a hater for this: these people were incredibly naive, not to mention arrogant and entitled. They are sailing in a war zone, in a yacht, pressing their beliefs on the have-nots. I understand that they were well-intentioned, but they were also deluded.
Okay, bring the hate (on me!).

its called the war on terror, but like I said before.
It is the way this country has sought to protect its citizens ever since the Barbary pirates discovered that US flagged ships were no longer operating under the protection of the British Navy, and began to prey upon them.
Know your history.

"Yo ho, yo ho, ooohhhh shit!"
I like how they keep hammering them long after it's been destroyed. Like target practice.

Just so strange that so many times the people we end up fighting with are the ones we are/were in cahoots with...

America has been playing this game since it started building frigates. The barbary pirates would extort european countries for passage in the mediteranian. When the us became a power the pirates intended to extort the US as well. Thomas Jefferson said no dice and sent the navy to bombard the base in tripoli where the pirates operated from. In the Marine's hymn thats where we get the line:"from the halls of montezuma to the shores of triploi." It's also about the same time the marine officers adopted the Mameluke sword.
Marine Corps history states that a sword of this type was presented to Marine First Lieutenant Presley O'Bannon by the Ottoman Empire viceroy, Prince Hamet, on December 8, 1805, during the First Barbary War, as a gesture of respect and praise for the Marines' actions at the Battle of Derne wikipedia.

It's time to take off the gloves the same way the ruskies did. The baorded a suspected vessel. siezed the contra band. sunk the vessel then executed the pirates. don't mess with the russians. They don't dick around.

Yep. It's also how the U.S. Marine earned the nickname of "leatherneck". Their original jackets had stiff leather lining around the neck to protect them from cutlass strikes from pirates.
From the Halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli...
EDIT: Hey Josh, I typed as you typed.

Ron said that did seem "effective" ^^^
Oh, so then the problem is fixed and there are no more pirates and nobody will ever again try to commits acts of piracy off the Somali coast? Then this whole conversation is moot. Mission accomplished!

The Russians really know how to take care of pirates. the motherships are really obvious out there. Bunch of skiffs tied to a larger vessel in the open ocean, sitting ducks for the warship target practise session in the below video

Russian Warship = bye bye Somali pirates, no questions asked

Kratman is typical of the clueless thumping of one gonad against another that always causes more problems than it solves. It's also painful to listen to folks like him who have a hard time perceiving and interpreting reality through the haze of [synthetic] testosterone swirling about them at all times. They inevitably can't tell a grizzly from a fire ant from a malaria parasite and is always grabbing for the wrong cure. Their prescriptions - like most of the ones in this thread - always go after the symptoms instead of the cause. And the really sad part is those prescriptions are generally always ineffective, the most expensive way to approach the problem, and always make the situation worse.
Sending the US Navy to deal with Somali pirates will never pencil out, ever. All it will result in is the occasional feel-good story and will have zero deterrence effect. When a solid chunk of the world's high-value goods have to pass a failed state this will always be the result. Again the barrier to entry on their side is low and the cost to control it on our side is incredibly high. We are in a similar situation in Iraq and Afghanistan relative to the cost of asymmetric warfare in the new IED world we have spent a trillion dollars perfecting.
And you guys wonder why we're broke? Get a grip...

Sorry Joe,
if you grab your ankles you are asking for more.
Do you really think we can buy them off with some social improvement? Educate them to the error of their ways?
This is how it works in the REAL WORLD.
Teach people who NOT to fuk with! THAT will educate them.
