Nothing like the rush of hearing the water gurgling below the ice, pulling your pick and watching the water spurt out of the empty placement. Really gets the boogaloo moving and a strong desire to run it out.

Just the line alone makes ice climbing a worthy endeavor.

The path of a drop of water...

I totally agree Kevin.

Karodrinker: You should get out and answer your own question. I hear the Vegas Hose Monster may be in. If you don't like the ice there at Charleston, there is still plenty of bolt clippin sport crags in area.

Climbing ice also will greatly improve your trad climbing. Putting in a nut or cam feels so easy after putting in screws that can take quite a while. I have a freind that always said that a warm day of ice climbing beats a cold day of rock climbing. Lastly to climb in a place like Cody you can go up huge canyons that you could never ascend any other way as the rock is so crappy. It kind of eliminates the riff raff.

On thin verglas there is nothing like the feel of putting your monopoint in the placement you just took your axe tip out of. Until of course the ice shears away underneath you when pulling your cramp point out to move up.

I just scared the piss out of myself soloing yesterday. Easy enough, get to top out and whoops, no more ice. Ack. Where the boyfriend had arms long enough to reach and hook a tree to get up and over, no such luck for me. It all worked out in the end after a few deep breaths and convincing myself that the tools buried in powder were good enough for balance and the feet I couldn't see were going to be good.

Anyway, short answer: no.

hey there say, karodrinker.... ohmy.... well, i am not a climber, or an ice climber... but as to the title, i must say this:

one really ought not to tackle any chore, by "is it as easy as i looks?"
;)

especially tackling ice... :O

as, "easy as it looks" always means just that:

you don't see the "whole" by just looking...
and a whole lot of experience underlays most chores...
"easy" it is, to take in a "view" of near about any thing...

awwwwwwwwww, well, you get my drift--we just don't want anything to happen to you, so take care, as you proceed with any new ventures...

it may look easy,,, but its always an adventure.
rotton ice...
verglace...
running water under the ice slab...
running water in between rotton layers of ice...
dinnerplates falling on yer belayer, hopefully
diagonally away from fall line..
foot thick rime ice..

some of my best friends are ice climbers, but if my daughter wanted to marry one ...

i have managed to secure the notes of a psychiatrist who had an ice climber on the couch for several sessions. it seems there are issues. for one, there's the latent warrior urge. that ice ax going "thunk" seems to satisfy a battle atavism going back to atilla the hun. then there's the business of penetrating something beautiful. these themes may be related. do ice climbers have satisfying sex lives?

re: dingus's last photo. "better latent than never." -- robin williams

um, yea, looks like fun, but you have to spend a lot of time with ice. damn, there must be all kindsa rotten, hard, half-hard, friable, shatterable, looks-good-but-it's-really-treacherous ice. life in southern california just isn't conducive to exploring this. when the mountains are white, i think about good corn.

You guys crack me up. That Freudian stuff isn't a blanket, it's a hand towel over a specific case.

Everyone is an individual, and should be treated as such. This grouping of traits undermines everything.

Jeez.

it's all true, brandon. ice axes have two parts, both longer than they are wide.
