Boy, folks sure like to make fun of the new climbers - I guess that never gets old.

Wow - I am thoroughly unimpressed by those responses.

Grow up, do your part to help the new climber and find humor in something other than people getting lost in the wilderness.

"Haha! You fukked up - what a loser" reminds me of middle school.

To their credit, I'm sure they DID have a cell phone somewhere in that 50lb pack, and they didn't use it to call in a rescue. Seems like they were willing to pay up to the cold bivy gods for their folly - and which of us hasn't been there?

But, leaving aside this defense for a second - how do you get lost at Echo? Just hit your car's keyless entry and follow the blinking lights...

Hi there, person-who-has-obviously-never-climbed-at-Echo!

Thanks for joining in on the 5th-grade derision!

BECAUSE IT IS A FUKKING 45-MINUTE HIKE INTO THE CLIFFS

But you are young and ADHD, so you probably skimmed the stuff that didn't fit in with your pre-conception of "a sport crag".

Detention for you, see you after school.

Did you even know it is a 30-minute drive into the coastal hills ( I cannot really call them mountains, being from Washington) with ZERO cell reception?

Oh, wait - you have never been there. Carry on.

Erik, if you and I had committed this, we would have gotten exhaustive grief for it, taken it and learned from it. Just passing it forward.

These guys may be the guides of tomorrow! When we get past the 'Famous climber belay' style age, and move to post Beckeyism, we mayt need these guys, and we dang sure want them ready!
...I'll be packin' a satellite phone.

now hold on thar just a minute, mr. E. i know from reliable sources that sandstone peak, the very peak which shadows echo cliffs, just clears 3,000 feet in altitude. it's the highest point in the santa monicas, which extend eastward into the hollywood hills and griffith park, and because it's a threethousander, it qualifies this entire range to be mountains, not hills. and whatever they got in washington state, we got higher in california and you know it. next time it's gonna be a pink belly.

whose side you on anyway? you want these noobs to be whupped by hills or mountains? mountains sounds lots better.

for general information, you do get cellphone reception many places down in echo, which has facilitated urgent rescues in the past. sometimes it takes a little dodging around to pick it up, but it's fairly prevalent, coming in from the east.
