We need to be objective, realistic and stern, essential qualities when dealing with anyone who ignores boundaries and standard social rules (don't steal or take advantage of friends). A key part of being objective here is to not make the common mistake of considering this young man as a "normal" person acting poorly. Not to say he shouldn't be accountable, but note how people used to call Michael Jackson a monster and so forth, fully believing he knew better and just chose to be weird and act like a nutter. In fact he WAS a nutter, combining mental illness with addiction - good for pitiful result every time.
This kid is not right, and all the punishment in the world will not "fix" him. He could recover, but it won't be easy or short term.

About 6 months ago, a friend posted on Facebook about a buddy of his, whose sis had gone missing, with a link. Going to the linked blog, the brother posted all sorts of information about the sis dating this "fellow" who had a history of mental instability, with a whole series of posters who jumped on the bandwagon, and began organizing on-the-ground searches, and calling businesses in the last seen area.
Turns out that the sis had gone off on a vacation with her new BF, of whom the family strongly disapproved, as he was not of the right religious mindset, so obviously "disturbed". In fact, she was attempting to get away from her wacko family altogether.
They had gone so far as to file a missing person case, SO THERE WAS A CASE NUMBER, for those who bothered to inquire.
So, be cautious when you hear one side of a story, that cannot be independently confirmed, from an anonymous source. Might be true, but the odds are that there are facts not in evidence.

I distrust people right off the bat when I meet somebody, and they identify themselves as "skeeter" or some such. That is a point against them. I really don't like nicknames.

I would like to know how this turned out, but the OP is not a regular here. Heonly posted twice and only July 2-3, 2010 to this thread. He must have spend the day signing up to and posting on every climbing forum he could find. He posted the same thing on lots of different climbing forums.
