So we are going to put two trash cans right next to the Food Storage lockers by this weekend. They are right next to the bus stop, so hopefully that will at least catch some of it. I asked for recycling as well, but was told not at this time (maybe that one will have to go up the chain a bit). I was told that if that didn't seem to be enough space than we could re-address it. I'm just psyched to get the ball rolling.
WB, if the trash cans don't work a dumpster might be put in. We'd just want to decide where to put it.
Thanks, for all of the positive (or negative) feedback, and cheers to Dean for giving me a kick in the ass!
BTW Silver (you're probably exaggerating your position), after traveling extensively, and seeing other cultures where picking up litter in nature is not a part of their norms, I really don't think there is a universal "common sense" about trash. I mean just in our own community folks used to toss their sh-t bags off of El Cap. The climbing community developed a different way of packing it out, and we are in the late stages of establishing this as the norm on Big Walls. There are still those that don't follow this ethic, but the more and more we educate and peer pressure those exceptions, the better the situation gets.
Over the last 8 years of working in the Park I have seen great strides with education to wilderness or front country users. Especially in the groups that didn't previously prioritize picking up litter as part of their nature experience. It's hard to see sometimes because the improvements are incremental.
Ken, do you think the Facelift might educate a few people about trash, recycling, and stewardship? :) yep

hey there all... say, i was just curious, as someone posted a sign, and fine, just a bit ago, and it got me to thinking:
there are signs that mention fines for littering, on roadways...
so i am now curious, is there fines for littering in national parks, or not... if there is, would posted signs, in store, restaurants, or whatever, tourist shops, etc, help, or not?
or posted some how?
just curious, had never thought on this, as i had always just kept my kids from littering... sadly, another person in the family, may have now changed all their habits :( ...
(mockery and bad examples, sure taint kids when done at vulnerable times)... :(

Way to get things done friends.
Kudos to Jesse, who follows in fine style in a tradition of exemplary individuals who deserve one of the world's plumb (except for money) jobs.
WB, if the trash cans don't work a dumpster might be put in. We'd just want to decide where to put it.
An idea, if it comes to that, Obviously a dumpster is a resource that will add work and work means money. Isn't there a dumpster at the bridalveil parking lot? I might be worth check how much use that gets there. If it's underused and the trash cans going in get overfilled, a switch might not demand extra stops to the dumpster bros and everybody's happy
Peace

You might jest or you might be right.
Let's not forget that the valley transportation plan calls for a multi-lane staffed checkpoint between MIddle Cathedral and El Cap to turn traffic around to reroute them to satellite parking areas. That's bound to impact the situation at El Cap and Cathedral, both from the stone and on the road.
The major bright point in the above is that I doubt they'll ever have the money and approvals to implement it all.
The dark point is that all decisions made have to be made as if this was the future we are planning for. (except for short term band-aids which is most of what happens)

bien trabajo Jesse
hope this is an improvement.
clearly what often happens in those el cap meadow bear boxes is less than what was envisioned when they were installed. one possibility is that the boxes fill up simply because there is nobody emptying them?
i always see the piles of coleman "disposable"(?) propane empties, stacked several high, right by the recycling bins at the campgrounds, and i hafta wonder if the inevitable reality won't be perpetually full trash cans as targets for thoughtless trash stackers, leaving stuff by the side to just blow around, so not a huge change from how the bear boxes are treated...
guuud luck!!

There now seems to be a designated collection point/container at the Camp 4 garbage/recycling area, for Coleman-type propane cylinders.

Does anyone have a problem with my making an attempt to be fair and balanced? Should I use different words?
It is just as mixed up out there as it is in here. Two or three Facelifts ago I was picking stuff up in El Cap Meadow. One group was out in the beaten down grass with a frisbee. i asked if it belonged to anyone. No one said a word. Then as I was depositing it in my garbage sack one spoke up and said it was his. I said, "Oh. I'm sorry." and moved on. Point made.
Out on the road people in some number began to bend down themselves, pick stuff up and bring it to me. Smiles on every last face.
Just as no group is all right. So too is no group all wrong.

Somewhat on topic, several have mentioned the use of the El Capitan bridge bear lockers for indefinite storage for all sorts of things. Some of which pretty gross.
I wonder if a simple solution would be to require that everything placed in those lockers be in a suitable container (box, bag, cooler), labelled with the owner's name, the date on which it was left, the date on which it will be removed, and perhaps a phone number? It would then be a relatively simple nuisance to clear out the stale-dated stuff every week or so.
