el jefe is right.
FEAR was uber good.
The Sex Pistols singing "My Way" is also right up there. I was way into punk. Now I am way into N.W.A.

Social D is great for sure- and still holds up.
I have my descendants around here somewhere. Enjoy my good friend, enjoy!
Someone said Meat Puppets- great band, but I wouldn't say they are punk, they could play too well.
How about the Dead Milkmen and King Missile? King Missile might not be punk though.
Dead Milkmen were my favorite.
Edit- I think I saw Deadmilkmen with Green Day at Slims in SF.

Would you count Wire? Any band that gets covered by Minor Threat is good enough for me. Everything Ian Mckaye touches is gold, including the new not-hardcore stuff, The Evens.
And can't forget about Bad Brains! Doing what everybody else was, only faster and way better.

Rum Sodomy and the Lash is one of my all time favorite albums, but is it punk?
My definitions are getting fuzzy, fuzzier than they already are to begin with.
When I listen to the clash now, years later, they don't sound punk at all. They still sound great, don't get me wrong, but not punk.
I think you early punks have a different definition.
When I think punk, I think ramones style, power chords, not much in the way of lead guitar lines, and fast.

I think The Stooges and Patty Smith pretty much got my attention. I was a keyboard player in a punk/new wave band in the early 80's. We covered X (ahhh, miss Cervenka), The Divinyls (that great Australian group), and of course the early Pretenders. As you can tell, we had a female lead singer, she had pink hair and would get the crowd up and and jumpin with Rock Lobster (B-52's) and a medley we did from The Rocky Horror Picture show. My 20 yr old son looks back at those pictures of me in my parachute pants and just shakes his head.

Nice thread!Saw Husker Du four times.Good shows.Grant Hart gave my buddy a ride to the hospital after he banged his head on the ceiling pipes stage diving.Replacements a couple of times.Got to skate with JFA after their show.Butthole Surfers warming up for the DK's was probably one of my favorites though.Bike messenger party in SF with the DK's and a band called Polkacide was pretty fun too.Skatin and hardcore were pretty much my deal from about '80 to '87.Too many shows to remember.Pretty much saw all the standard bands as well-Black Flag,Circle Jerks,Minor Threat,Misfits,Samhain,FEAR,etc.,etc.Good times!!

There is a fabulous documentary about Strummer: The Future is Unwritten. Much of the film is focused on the post-Clash roller-coaster ride. I highly recommend it.

Johnny Cash, not punk, but certainly helped begat punk.
Loved (love) Husker Du, Bad Religion, Minute Men, Clash, DKs, SPs, etc.
I think in modern times we have such good access to good music via the internets. But back when we were stuck with the shite the radio played (take a look at the top ten from, say, 1984), first exposures to punk felt like a blast of fresh honest air.

The first Clash album is pretty punk. After that they diversify alot, going into ska, reggae etc.
Grew up in Torrance in the early 80's. Black Flag, Minutemen and Angry Samoans were the big local acts. Saw an early version of the Go-Gos trying to be punk.
Scariest show I went to was the Germs when I was pretty young. Very violent, Darby Crash slicing himself up on stage with a razor. While I had fun in mosh pits when older, that one was too much for me at that age.
Saw a number of great X shows.
Oingo Boingo was only sort of punk, but put on awesome shows. The Halloween shows at Irvine Meadows are one of my favorite concert memories.

GG Allin must deserve some kind of an award although it won't be for anything involving talent.
Some friends of mine in Vancouver. I highly recommend catching a show if they come your way especially if you have a thing for cider.

Anyone get any of the Punkorama cds. The local gearshop always had good stickers for them in the 90's. I think I ended up with Punkorama 1-8 very good compilation cd's with about 25 different bands per.
