The story related somewhere above about the hound and the death of a baby comes from a poem--"Beth Gelert or The grave of the Greyhound". It's a beautiful and sad poem but, as far as I know, not related to historical fact; at least, I hope not.

WoodyS is close.

The story of Gelert is a variation on a well-worn myth,
and is the basis for a poem by William Robert Spencer
written around 1800.

In 1210 AD an Irish wolfhound, Gelert, was sent as a gift
to Llewellyn, King of Wales, by Prince (later King) John
of England. In the story, Llywelyn returns from hunting
to find his baby's cradle overturned, the baby missing
and the dog with blood around its mouth. Imagining that
it has savaged the child, he draws his sword and kills
the dog. He then hears the cries of the baby and finds it
unharmed under the cradle, along with a dead wolf which
had attacked the child and been killed by Gelert. Llywelyn
is then overcome with remorse and he buries the dog with
great ceremony.

Gelert's burial place is known as Beddgelert (Gelert's Grave).
I know because I use to live near there (Tregarth) and
have been in the village on a number of occasions (it's
located in Gwynedd, lying in Snowdonia, great climbing
area and one of the birthplaces of British climbing).

However, the village of Beddgelert probably got its
name from an early saint named Kilart or Celert, and
not from the legendary hound. And the mound of earth
which is suppose to be the grave is no doubt a
tourist attraction.

How could anyone think to post a cat amongst dogs??

The difference?

With a dog, you are friend and master.

With a cat, you are the servant.

Hey Watusi, i was waiting for you to post on this on. I know how close you are with your dogs!! Hey tusi, you mentioned the pups of your dog Cody, is that the man Shawn we all know? I was just thinking about him today ironically because Badyrka called and is in the area looking for a beer buddy! Ahhh man them were the days...the house on Huntington Harbour, livin the "high life" with the climbing bro's, sitting on the deck listening to Shawn play the ivory and drinking BEERS!
Merry Christmas to you and Pat and Nick and Shawn and Russ and John(s)and everyone else. I'd post my dog Timber, but I can't figure I know how to get a photo on the web site. Dumby me, but MY dog is cute and cool.
Peace

Lois found it--The poem. I used to use this poem year after year when I taught fifth and sixth graders as part of my rather extensive poetry unit. I'd introduce it as a very sad poem that would get most of "You delinquents" crying by the end. The boys of course...ha ha ha.
Each year, at poem's end, not a sound, and not a dry eye in the room.

Indeed they are whippets - and you got it! they are most definitely hot water bottles... which works wonders on a cold denver night.

Matt, don't go picken a fight w/ the whippets... they can be down right vicious, ya know. Even late into a beating w/ a tire iron they can take you down and rip out your liver in a split second.

Which reminds me, Max caught a squirle at the park last week. Killed it quick too. It was a tad disturbing seeing him toss the squirle up in the air and catch the head and I heard him split the skull. I was proud indeed.

It's just terribe - I've been playing favorites.....

Teddy is my own pup, but since late October, I've been caring for one of my client's dogs(she had to go to Australia, as her mom is sick. Ollie is going through quarantine, and will be heading over in late February).

I should have put his picture in before, and I will look for a good one later on. But, I have been trying to get him used to wearing a santa hat, so I can send a photo to "mom." I don't think this one quite captures the spirit she would want to see.....

one good thing about the lab is that when he does chase after stuff, i pretty much know he won't be catching it, unless it's a frisbee!

well if i knew how to post pictures, you'd see the most loyal dog yet. she's been up and down and to and fro with me and is on her last leg, so sad to say. how good are dogs though brothers? man, amazing partners they be.

I told my pap and mam that i was going to the mountains to climb and be a mountain man. They acted like they was gutshot. They said, "No son, go here, heres where the peoples is." I told them, "The sierra mountains is the marrow of the world." By God i was right. My dog's been with me since.
