I think it is better to watch this movie and so SPOILERS ALERT @$&

The structure of the movie is a bit complicated, with its multiple flashbacks, but it works if you’re paying attention. This film has a large cast of good actors and a very noir feel, with few admirable characters. British-born Ida Lupino is particularly effective as the faithless Julia Thomas, and Glenn Ford is appropriately moody as a Walz who is alternately sympathetic and murderous. Ford’s German accent is slippery. The weakest link in the cast is William Prince as Barry Storm; but he’s not terrible and spends most of his time narrating. This was based on Thunder God’s Gold, a 1945 book by the real Barry Storm that renewed interest in the Lost Dutchman Mine, but there are many versions of the story. The real Jacob Walz supposedly died of pneumonia in 1891 after flooding on his Arizona ranch. Author Storm was not in fact a grandson of Walz, and sued the studio.

There are some painted backgrounds and obvious studio shots, and the earthquake sequence does not look particularly real. But the movie is nevertheless quite watchable. This was director S. Sylvan Simon’s last film; he died a short time later of a heart attack at 41. Shot on location in Arizona, in black and white by Archie Stout; 90 minutes in length.

Plot Edit

In modern times, a newspaper reports that "noted explorer and writer" Floyd Buckley (Hayden Rorke) claims to have discovered the location of the lost gold mine. He is approached by Barry Storm (William Prince), who believes he has some claim to it, as the Dutchman was his grandfather. Buckley brushes him off, but when he heads into the Superstition Mountains, Storm secretly follows him.

However, an unseen killer shoots Buckley, making him the fourth recent murder victim. Storm notifies Sheriff Early (Paul Ford) and his deputies Covin (Will Geer) and Walter (Jay Silverheels). Covin tells Storm more about the mine; a hundred years before, Pedro Peralta had hidden $20 million in gold in the most inaccessible of his mines, only to be killed by the Apaches for defiling a place holy to their "thunder god". His greed whetted, Storm investigates further.

A flashback follows. In 1880, Jacob "Dutchy" Walz (Glenn Ford) and his friend Wiser (Edgar Buchanan) overhear Ludi (Arthur Hunnicutt) carelessly call his companion "Peralta" (Antonio Moreno). Recognizing the name, they trail the pair into the mountains. After Ramon Peralta finds his brother's mine, Walz and Wiser gun the two other men down in cold blood; then Walz treacherously shoots Wiser too.

When Walz returns to Phoenix with huge gold nuggets, the news spreads quickly. Scheming, discontented Julia Thomas (Ida Lupino) becomes acquainted with Walz, without telling him she is married to Pete (Gig Young). His suspicions of her motives are allayed by the fact that she can speak German. They soon fall in love. When she finally tells him about her husband, Walz gives her money to bribe Pete into giving her a divorce. However, Walz later learns that Julia has lied to him repeatedly. Unseen, he watches as Julia placates her husband by telling him she will soon learn the location of the mine.

Walz gives Julia directions to the treasure. Though Julia seems to care for Walz, Pete forces her to show him the map. When the couple reach the mine, Walz pins them down with his rifle. In the ensuing gunfight, Pete eventually runs out of bullets. Walz cruelly toys with them, letting them go without water. Finally, Julia stabs Pete in the back and pleads with Walz to believe she loves him. Before he can act, an earthquake triggers a rockfall that crushes her and closes the mine.

The film returns to the present. Storm has uncovered enough information that he believes he knows where the mine is. When he gets to the key landmark, he encounters Covin, who pulls a gun on him. It turns out that the deputy has been searching for the mine for twenty years and has been disposing of his competitors. A fight breaks out; Covin is about to push Storm off the mountain when a poi

Dogs with Wings

You wanted to go out
I saw you doing doggy things
And you ran about so freely
As though you had two wings

Then you ran on up the hill
And you sniffed around the trees
Then you ran across the field
And you chased after some bees

And then you chased a cottontail
And you wiggled under the fence
I called and called your name
But you're a dog in your defense

But then you wiggled back again
Was it your name that you heard?
As you ran back down the hill
Then you saw a passing bird

Then you jumped into the air
And you sprouted two big wings
As I saw you fly away
And I've seen many things

I've never seen you do
What you did upon that day
But when you came back home
Your wings had gone away

I was rubbing my two eyes
And then I pinched myself
I woke up from a dream
And saw the clock upon the shelf

It was time to let you play
I got up and let you out
And you never sprouted wings
Though there were birds flying about

I held a secret hope
That you were a magic being
Then I feared you would fly far away
Never again to be seen

But you ran around the yard
And you came back in the house
After drinking lots of water
You were quiet as a mouse

I know that you will never
Grow wings and fly away
But I think that if you could
You would love us anyway

I know you're just a dog
And you do many a doggy thing
But the loyalty in your ways
Brings out the best in you and me

Someone's being clever with the names, I'll give them that.

Ida Lupino as a blonde was surprising. I failed to recognize her right off. Her playing the role of a bits was not, as she can do it so well.

Ida was a powerful woman in Hollywood (especially for the times) and a talented director who surprised many critics, but whose box office was unfortunately not all that.

I liked the first video, Gnome, mainly because of the first part, where the crowd is involved. All those folks pushing and shoving and nosying up to the rich boy...kinda like the forum somehow. But in the older movies the characters in the crowds, the extras, can make a huge contribution in the film's entertainment value. Let me rephrase--they make a huge contribution to ANY good movie, not just the oldies.

Back to Ida Lupino, though. She is probably most recognized from High Sierra as the unlucky Marie who falls in love with Humphrey Bogart's Roy Earle, a hardened crim.

That film was shot on location at Whitney Portal, btw.

Another Lupino-directed film I want to check out is The Bigamist (1953), a noir film with Edmund O'Brien and Joan Fontaine. With this film, Lupino became the first woman in the modern era to direct herself in a major film.

The Bigamist was one of the first films to use product placement; the shoestring budget was bolstered by fees from Cadillac, Coca-Cola and United Airlines.

http://sistercelluloid.com/2015/09/12/streaming-saturdays-lupino-fontaine-fall-for-the-bigamist/

Santa noir, a genre you didn't know existed.

Here is a twist which I chuckled over. The screenwriter of The Bigamist, Collier Young, was married briefly to Lupino. In 1953, when the film was shot, he had been married to Joan Fontaine, playing the second female lead, for a few years.

And Bushman said, "Turns out the dirty skunk was a bigamist, so I got lucky."

Living on top of a highball is certainly not for everyone.
Stylite Tower / Umm ar-Rasas, Jordan

This Byzantine tower may have been used as a retreat for hermit monks (stylites).
It had a room at the top but was otherwise solid inside.
Food and drink, for the inhabitant, would have to be drawn up in a basket.
The tower is currently in ruinous shape, being cracked from top to bottom.

St. Simon Stylites, the most famous of the Catholic church's "pillar saints," is the official patron of solo climbers and high-balling boulder climbers, or should be.

For Daisy
(And her people)

Off with the kids at play
They had Daisy there that day
As they drove the long way home
They had Daisy on the way
Daisy with the soft brown fur
Daisy was so good
Daisy pup they loved you
As much as anybody could

At the crag or in the parking lot
There was Daisy at their side
Most anywhere that they would go
Daisy would abide
Daisy with her muzzle soft
And Daisy's furry feet
Daisy they all loved you
With a love that was complete

If they could have listened to
All of Daisy's puppy dreams
And all the good things Daisy thought
And how her heart would sing
When she was with her people
Time was endless and replete
The love that she returned tenfold
Made for a life complete

Daisy they all loved you
And they knew you loved them too
They knew that you would do for them
Whatever you could do
Daisy you were a good girl
Though life can be unfair
Daisy they'll always honor you
Because a dog like you is rare

Off with the kids at play
They had Daisy there that day
As they drove the long way home
They had Daisy on the way
Daisy with the soft brown fur
Daisy was so good
Daisy pup they loved you
As much as any family could

Stirring the Pot on a Rainy Afternoon

This house in Northern California has been under Federal Agencies' surveillance for several months because it's rumored that it is a safe house for Joaquín Guzmán Loera, aka El Chapo, the fugitive head of the Sinaloa drug cartel.
It's tough getting the truth when there are so many truths out there.

The Feds know for a fact that El Chapo is 5'6" tall, thus reducing his chances of hiding among a basketball team.

I guarded El Chapo once in a pick-up game. He couldn't jump, wasn't quick, couldn't shoot. The mofo couldn't even speak English, let alone talk sheeit.

He left that day through a tunnel.

Nobody knows and few will even hazard a guess - so Rod Steward, Scotland, a long time ago.

Grounded this Saturday night, so catching up on my reading, but missing a party and pouting about it.

Bummer. But, hey, it is wonderfully warm here, 60F today, sunny and balmy, not your usual Montana in March, which is usually cold and snowy. I checked: a dozen years ago, it was -20F. I am watching for the tulips to bloom, and now that it is night, watching the fairy lights swaying in the wind as the pine tree dances to a tune I hear as a soft whisper in the needles of the trees.

Bushman, your words sing together so very well.

Mouse, you find the coolest old pickups. The Lee Vining pickup looks like an ancient sculpture cast aside in a lonely place from a caravan, abandoned and left high and dry when it could not keep up with the other mechanical camels. What a life of work, carry, and sight-seeing it must have had so far.

Meanwhile, I am reading W. H. Murray's The Evidence of Things Not Seen. Impressed with his life and all he was able to accomplish.

Gnome, I read about the anniversary of the last nap. And Bushman's heart-warming poem. We never forget them.

I wonder if it would change our lives, for any of us, if we found a pot of gold. Or a lost gold mine. I think we pretty much live content and comfortable as we are. But I guess we could help a lot of people if the rainbow's end story came true, or the leprechaun's hoard were found. Or the golden flowers really did mark a mine. (Mouse, I think you have the book with that story.)

And now, back to Mr. Murray, who has just survived a bad fall and been released from the hospital, with an as yet undiagnosed concussion.

Carry on, carry on.

To spring time in time this year

&
as if by intervention
the Chezc Sheperd got a small wiff, a Taste of her 1st skunk last night.

I'd had a premonition that I was unable to articulate
I tried , I really did, but that girl....
My wife,
she spoils things,So loves them,
that they cling to her, to a fault.
The girl dogs have been the worst.
The silly girl dogs, they sense my wince-s
Or my angst, I'm not sure, which ?
Maybe both

the two girl dogs The 'b' eees, they have to wait for the big B!

It got old immediately,
I have no patients patience - bed side dog walking manner?
No dog side bed walking manner.? No dog walking bedside manner.

The thing is that the original dogs 20 yrs ago
were to get me up and walking off a broken hart
My heal was in Need of a mend too.

There was almost no break, between the passings
of our, most best hard loved dogs,
and the rescue of the next.

from the Thunder & Lightening,
who were pups
together.
( and went with me every time everywhere, good Boys )

then getting Daisy dog as a rescue, before, she went to the pound.
With Daisy, it was a sad thing to absorb a loved dog, from a breaking family
We stayed in distant touch, with notes about her, sent to London England

I try to tell her, really I did
but the wife, she just do as she do, when she wants to...

Please babe, I tried to say,

"Hey now,"
"Why don't cha' - go now,"-
" it is nice out - kinda still light out , not full dark yet...".

She scolls at me and says she is Not ready yet, in a bit...

I head off for an early version but the dog that dog won't hunt.... It waits for her.....

This again! tell the truth, all the girl dogs stick to her like glue.

I have to call out and say tell this dog to go with me ,
Then she my sweet wife, says "pooppo peepee go poo-cka-cka"
Then the dog, if she wants to, she wags off sometimes it takes the mommy girl to come out side and insist! And she is up on the couches & beds.... Spoiled ..... Are we rhyming yet?

Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth.. that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.”

Which is another way to say "Go with the flow."

Sounds like he's a big fan of fairy dust, at least to me he does.

We will be forever young and bold."I'm a nut, but not just a nut."--Bill Murray, always the comic
