OMG, Bradley should be jerked. His first touches have sucked, he completely
misjudged Zusi's corner, and he looks lost. Kudos to Juergen and the team
for adjusting plus I think Germany let up on the gas a little. Huge kudos
to Jones, Gonzalez, Zusi, and Johnson.

It's 0-0 at half (Germany v. USA of course), but that's only cuz soccer is kind of a dumb game (at least for spectators, it's undoubtedly good exercise for kids).
Should be something 5-0 in Germany's favor, but I don't know if the tie is just the way soccer works (oftentimes there's no score, irrespective of one team being obviously far superior) or if there is collusion to draw, which would be a perfect result for each team.

I'm not watching the game, but isn't that sometimes a tactic, to play a more defensive game when playing a stronger team? Holding your defenders back from supporting any offense, thus causing the offense to appear to be weak, when really its just not supported. In the hopes that better conditioning will in time start to play out. That is predicated on better conditioning of course. So you play defense in the hopes of a low scoring game and as you frustrate the other team drawing them into more and more aggressive attacks, then you look for those opportunities when they are pushed forward to send one deep and possibly win.
Would the above be accurate and or possible in this game? Or are they just being outplayed?

John M--I don't really know the answer to your questions, I suppose that's possible.
But in any event: Germany has scored and seems solidly in control (even though it's just 1-0 as I write this).
Ghana and Portugal are tied. If Ghana wins by one goal and we lose by one goal, I *think* we still advance, but could be wrong.
If Ghana wins by a combined greater goal differential than that, I think we go home.
So we're still looking pretty good and the current status quo puts us in, but it ain't over yet, and the results of both games are still important.
Edit: Portugal is now up 2-1, so unless there are some big shift in the last 10 mins, US will advance

LOL.. yes.. and I'm not a doctor, but I play one on the taco..
I brought up that theory because I have seen it used to great effect and was wondering. Plus it was said about a previous game that the US was getting walked all over, yet they won. So I was wondering if that was the tactic being used.
or I could be blowing smoke.. :-D

America loses and still advances.
That's how American kids grow up these days - with that sense of entitlement.

Help out someone who knows nothing about soccer here.
Why did the U.S. even bother playing if they advanced into the next round by losing?
FIFA politics?

You'd prefer then grew up brainless like you? Unable to comprehend basic math for the round-robin portion of the tournament?

Chaz: goal differential also plays a role in who advances from the 1st round.
With 1 less day of rest and to have played the previous game in Manaus, this is a respectable outcome. Is US the only team to have played in Manaus and advance?

The US, after a rough opening 20 minutes and settled down
and played reasonably well. Holding Germany to a single goal
is quite an accomplishment for our team, and I think we've
got a fighting chance against Belgium!!!!

Chaz: goal differential also plays a role in who advances from the 1st round. And another reason why the US "bothered playing"--if we would have beat Germany, we would have actually won our group, which means we would have played another group's second place instead of first place.
In real terms, that means we'll play Belgium instead of Algeria.
We have about as good of a shot of beating Belgium as we do Germany (close to zero), whereas we could likely beat Algeria, or at least have a good chance.

How many shots on goal did the US have? 2 in the last 2 minutes?
It kind of looked like a cat batting around a mouse it caught with Germany fully in control the entire game. A 1-0 loss was a pretty good outcome.

Hello from Munich's largest biergarten.....watching USA vs. Germany.....with about 6000 psycho fussball fans. This place is out of control. I'm not a soccer fan but we just had to make our way over here tonight.

In fact, US benefited from Cristiano Ronaldo's goal vs Ghana today and Germany's trouncing vs Portugal in the 1st game
If at the end of the 1st round 2 teams have the same points and same goal differential does it go to head-to-head next or total goals scored?
