finally read born to run last night.
pretty cheesy. but the account of the final race is fun.
i finaly broke down and bought a pr of virbam 5 finger ksos. they fit perfect, feel great, really nice for someone like me who tries to go barefoot as much as possible because store-bought shoes don't fit.
but i'm not sure i can wear them in public. growing up in the rural mid-south, my gender socialization was pretty strict.

Nice trip to Phoenix. Sunday, May 1 - Camelback Mountain. 25:38 up the Cholla trail, easy down the Echo side, backup Echo in 25:10, easy down to the car. Tuesday, 14 mile hike in the Superstitions to Dripping Spring from the Peralta trail head. Maybe I can shed a pound or two one of these days. I have to try to stay in reasonable shape for when brassnuts returns to Vegas.

so i did my local normal trail loop (normal when I haven't had pneumonia or whatever) in the KSOs. mostly walking & stretches of survival shuffle. i'm used to doing it in my heavy approach shoes, so the lightness was weird.
probably be sore tomorrow.

Got 8 miles in running through Washington Park and the Arboretum yesterday. The Azelas are blooming, and the rhodies are close.
Did 5.5 miles down on the waterfront today. Somehow managed to run between showers.
Not looking forward to the weekend's planned exertions with the forecast of rain and snow on the mountains.

I swear that snow is warmer. It shakes right off. That 35 - 45 degree rain just saturates and chills. My house is a 2,000+ square foot drying room for all my wet gear!!!
Think I'll wander into the hot tub tonight and rewarm. I'll be thinking about that when the rain is soaking me again tomorrow.

Seamstress gets post #420, and that leads to a question.
Do any of you puff before you run? I've got a friend, a lady and a marathoner, who claims that getting stoned before a marathon helps, as it allows for greater focus and compartamentalization of pain.

Sully, her PR is right around yours, I'd have to ask her for the specific number.
Four marathons a year, plus leading trad deep into the .12's gives her some credibility.

I can't say that I ever tried racing stoned. The more I raced, the less drinking I did pre-race. I've done 35 marathons with a PR of 3:10 at Boston while working an executive job and being a mom of 3. I used to race 40+ times a year and have boxes of 3rd place trophies - second class. Ability to focus was always there without any artificial assistance.
I'm no doctor, but I would be really careful about putting anything in my body then going at 85% max for a few hours.
Marathon isn't painful. Carrying 100 pounds for a few hours = painful, whining.

Those blue skies were MIA today. I got in my 5 miles with the 100 pounds. It was 1/2 hour faster than last weekend, but still not fast enough to brag out loud. This time I attempted a ski descent with the pack and sled. Surprisingly, I am still alive and was not eaten by a tree well.
The weather will be crappy again tomorrow. But I hope I am inspired to climb St. Helens in my dress along with the other "cuties" that I saw setting up camp.
