DMT, did you consider the last sentence you quoted? I personally think it isn't worth the cost. Apparently, so do you.

What % of US gross domestic product is now agriculture-related? As John says, strategically it may be an important percentage, but it seems likely that it has been steadily declining for the last century, as has farm employment. Likewise consolidation of the the industry.

Virtually every industrialized country determinedly protects domestic agriculture interests.

shut up and pull-

Rick Perry? You must be shitting me-the man is a hypocrite of the highest order-i almost choked on my milk when i saw him begging for federal aid after the wildfires in his state. They may deserve it, but when you piss and moan about the federal gov't being too big too intrusive too whatever, then you shouldn't come crying to it for aid, and then bitch when it turns you down. Yep, you should just roll up your sleeves and pull yourself up by your republican bootstraps.

and then there is this bullshit:

I'm saying democrats and republicans are equally responsible for the ag industry subsidies. Its corporate welfare of the highest order. The very same people who argue for free trade and against trade barriers typically don't have the courage to face the truth of the situation.

Fix the problem, not the blame!

i admit W had some funny speaking mistakes, but i tend to see these as simply human rather than an indication of ignorance...and, of course, i think barry has had an equal number of mistakes (my favorite from the campaign: "we've visited 58 states") and gets a pass from the media/libs

here's barry's latest:

“Internationally, we’ve gone through a Teutonic shift in the Middle East that could have enormous ramifications for years to come,” he said.

teutonic: a reference to ancient germans

hmmm...ancient germans are taking over the middle east?

but, later in the day, the wh staff corrected the transcript to read "tectonic"

tectonic: "of or pertaining to building or construction"

so barry can't even correct his speech correctly...does anybody in the wh staff know what they're doing?

jghedge's arguments comparing percentages of state deficits to percentages of federal deficits is meaningless. States cannot print money, and therefore cannot monetize their debts.

California has shown no ability as a state to pay for what it spends. The ultra-partisan nature of California Democrats' and Republicans' solutions are two sides of the same coin: let someone else (who votes for the other party) pay for it. Until we have a change in the governance of our state to allow meaningful participation by centrists, I see no change for the better.

Only in your Fantasyland are the rates we have now sustainable.

The rates of what? The tax rates represent the historical tax take since WWII. The spending rates, on the other hand, represent by far the highest in that same time period.

Pretty much explains why NOT ONE repub got elected to statewide office in CA, eh?

Can you say "Gerrymandering"
Can you say "funneling taxpayers money through public unions to buy off the whores in Sacramento"

How do you "Gerrymander" a statewide office?

What whores were bought off that resulted in statewide offices being filled with democrats?

"here's barry's latest:"

bookworm, I'll admit the guilty pleasure of a cheap shot when it comes to highlighting Shrub's (fairly regular) oratory mis-steps- anyone who is critical of government ought to articulate much more substantive issues.

It's just that, in Shrub's case...there were sooooooooo many of them.

Yes, Obama's only been in office a couple of years so far (seems like an eternity, don't it, Repubs?), but I seriously doubt that he has made anywhere near as many stooooopid statements during that time as Shrub did in the same time period.

A tectonic shift is a term borrowed from geology, referring to a HUGE shift in underground structures that result in an earthquake.

In common parlance, it refers to any huge shift of any kind.

Please cite that last time that Ca, as a state, has failed to pay a bill, or defaulted on a debt?
